Stambaugh Golf Course reopens until October

Published: Wed, September 9, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The “closing” of the city-owned Henry Stambaugh Golf Course didn’t last long.

Because of the city’s struggling financial situation, it closed the course on Saturday.

City officials met Saturday morning and came up with a plan to reopen the course Sunday, Mayor Jay Williams and Jason Whitehead, director of that department and the mayor’s chief of staff, said today.

The city never gave any public notice that the course on the North Side reopened.

“In our scramble and last-minute work” the city forgot to announce the reopening of the course, Williams said.

The cash-strapped city closed the 9-hole course because it laid off most of Stambaugh’s employees last week.

City officials decided to “realign” the parks and recreation department staff to keep the golf course open, Whitehead said.

“It’s kind of a juggling act,” he said.

I always had problems with that fence on the long par 5 over Fifth Ave.
I am glad to hear ithe course is open again. That city resident discount is fantastic.

Lol I've not heard of another course where you have to shoot over the street. We used to make the person who didn't make it over the fence pay for drinks (there was always atleast one). The course has needed some TLC for years and with the budget as it is it is good to close her down. The courses at Mill Creek are nicer anyhow.

The long par 5 doesn't go over Fifth Avenue. The hole before the long hole does.

You are right. It has been awhile. The one over Fifth is a short par 4.
