Report: President Obama to visit Lordstown plant next week

Published: Wed, September 9, 2009 @ 10:40 p.m.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to make a speech at General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown next week, according to a report from the Detroit News.

The White House won’t confirm the visit yet, but officials told the newspaper the president is planning the trip Tuesday as part of a Midwest swing to talk about jobs and the economy.

The president plans to highlight the fact that GM is recalling 1,050 workers next month to return to work at the Trumbull County plant.

This sounds like standard operating procedure for management to assess performance of the manufacturing facility. I mean if you buy it you better make sure things are running to your liking.

Birdbrains, we are entering another depression. Unemployment if calculated by the same standards as the Great Depression is at 16.7%. The banks are more fragile than ever to fail again. This was all caused because we delayed the last recession. Our government has become "too big to fail" yet there is no one to bail it out when China decides we are no longer credit worthy.... It IS happening.

Penguin sure this alot being done. The mint is printing money at a record pace for the federal welfare. Good news is there will probably be a new 10,000 dollar note so we can keep up with the peso

Right now we can't afford to even pay attention to healthcare. Before we do anything, getting rid of programs or creating them, we need to pull our military out from around the world. We can't afford to be the world's police officer anymore. If you want to see real change it would be strengthing our military and securing the country by bringing them home. We are spread too thin.

Lordstown should have closed. It only invested $350,000,000 in the valley last year.

Those commenting on the Lordstown workforce have most likely never worked inside the facilty. Just as those that feel they can dictate how the rest of the world should live probably have not been outside of our borders. I have been fortunate enough to do both and I can say from experience that I left GM in 1981 after 10 years....they couldn't pay me enough to do that mind numbing, back breaking work for 10 hours a day-.5-6 days a week.

Having been to Socialist/Communist countries I watch the proposed changes to our system and they are not even close to Socialism or Communism. Acording to the Wall Street Journal we see that the banks that have repayed the TARP funds have generated a 17% return for the taxpayer. That's not to say they will all succeed but if they want to get the Government off their backs they repay along with dividends and the cash needed to release the warrants the Feds hold. That is not Socialism...that's Capitalism created as well as any hedge fund manager might design.

I do not know if this will be as successful with the auto industry TARP funds but let's hope for the best and buy our own products while we have stock in the company. The sooner we drive GM's stock prices up the sooner the Government can unload their position and we can recapture our tax dollars.

Hey UnionForever you should be kissing Obamas feet. He should have let GM fail, close up all plants and open them up as NON union plants, pay a FAIR wage and tell the unions they are NOT needed anymore. Back in the early part of the 1900's unions were needed, now they just suck the profits out of companies so they can no longer compete with the rest of the world. I hope your happy because "Unions built this country and now they are destroying this country"
You Union fools should be happy Obamas paying a visit.
Good speech last night

How appropriate, the Car Salesman & Chief coming to Lordstown. I will give him credit, the man can orate. Last night, I thought he was going to throw in a free undercoating & all weather floor mats with the Utopian health care program he was schlepping!!

I cannot wait to hear his speech @ Lordstown, here is a possibility:

[Hello Ohio!! My personal story is a lot like those of you here in Lordstown. However, in Hawaii, we had sun, scenic beaches, and tourism. You guys have gray clouds, Lake Milton, & no commerce. What I am saying is I can relate to your situation.

Let me address the future of GM and what you can expect. Without increasing the federal deficit, we are going to make Government Motors profitable by making sure every American has at least one automobile. Those who already have a vehicle, can keep it. For those poor Americans without vehicles, it is a fundamental right that the government provide one to you. In addition, the White House has developed a new program called Cash 4 Matchbox Cars. If you or your children have a Matchbox car, you can trade it in for a Chevy Cobalt!! We can accomplish all this without spending a dime of your money. This is the 'change' you voted for in November.]

Barak Obama = Smoke 'n' Mirrors
Barak Obama Supporters = Smucks

Hey Freethinker, I like your optimism, and admittedly I drive a GM. There is no way the Federal Government is going to be reimbursed those 'bailout' dollars from Chrysler or GM!! Look at the math, and where the stock price is currently. Not to mention the large stake the UAW now has in each company.

Although, we could run over contract law again, and make sure the government is reimbursed in full prior to the UAW seeing one cent from their stake in these companies. That would only be fair giving what happened to bond holders in both companies prior to the takeover!! That would be a kick in the teeth for the UAW!!

Regards,
PS

Well GM Lorstown may not be the same today as it was yesterday but it is still operating . When Youngstown Sheet and Tube closed they were gone . GM Lordstown re-tooled and continued on .

Obama's coming is all about pushing his health plan which he says has a few loose ends . My cat sleeps on a sweater that has a few loose ends . Obama's health plan hasn't been fully woven by any means . Sign the blank check and he will take care of the details.

The people who've posted here are hilarious idiots! Smucks??? I think you we're trying to say schmucks but were far too illiterate to spell. Probably to lazy to look it up also.

I find it funny that a bunch of people on here complained just days ago that Obama was going to be in Cincinnati but not coming to Ytown. Now that he is coming here, they blast him for doing it. I will tell you the same thing that was told to me over the previous 8 years, SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT & SUPPORT THE COUNTRY YOU COMMUNISTS!

The wise people know that real money doesn't get pulled out of thin air . Beware of the person who wants a blank check signed and will take care of the contract details later .

Before the government spends a penny, that penny must have been taken from somebody. Even when they print money, or borrow it from China, they are reducing our personal resources by devaluing the currency. Also when they do this, they are also indebting humans not yet born (it is beyond shocking how so many are "cool" with this fiscal strategy).

So on we go, our treasury is full of IOUs and the "leaders" are as spend-happy as ever. Will we get lucky in the future and buy bread with million dollar bills (ie Zimbabwe) or will we use worthless cash to start fires like the Confederacy did at the end of the Civil War?

The way our monetary system works is that without debt we would have no money... money is created through debt. When they create money they create debt. "It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning."

S4A,

I don't believe that the government must run a deficit or be in debt. Andy Jackson paid off the federal debt (the last Prez to do so) and Clinton ran a tiny and brief surplus (although I disagree with his methods).

Are you refering to FDRs dropping the gold standard for all printed money?

BTW, Henry Ford's books were coveted by Adolf Hitler and I'm not inclined to find inspiration in his "wisdom."

I'm refering to the fact that we have a fiat currency system that is not backed by gold but rather by debt. Fiat currencies have failed everytime they are used in history. Under this system, if there were no debt there would be no money.

Every dollar you hold is someone else's IOU that they are paying interest on. If everyone some how managed to pay off all their debt, there wouldn't be any money. The Federal Reserve lends to banks with money that they themselves have created and they earn interest on something that did not exist prior to that!

Hey Youngstown_Strong,
You are correct, I misspelled the word schmucks. I appreciate you going out of your way to correct my error. If you are going to call someone out in a post for a spelling mistake, it might make sense to correct your own work for spelling and grammatical miscues before clicking the 'Post Comment' button.
