Box of sensitive records recovered in Cleveland

Published: Wed, September 2, 2009 @ 3:30 p.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — County officials in Cleveland say a box of sensitive records that fell off a truck has been recovered and the information was never compromised.

The box contained encrypted tapes with Social Security numbers and other personal information on 300 people who do business with Cuyahoga County. Officials say it was headed for storage Aug. 24 when it dropped off a truck and was then struck and kicked down a street by another truck.

County Administrator Jim McCafferty says still later that same day, the box was found and picked up for safekeeping by an employee whose company works with the storage vendor. The box was turned over on Monday.

Officials say they opened it Tuesday and verified its contents were intact.

So this highly sensitive material was being carried to storage on a open truck bed. And public officials wonder why taxpayers think they are idiots!

And the gov't wants to electronic records of all our medical records along with the ability to look at our tax returns to determine if we qualify for healthcare. I am sure they would guard those records with the same care they showed here.

No thanks.....
