High-speed rail plan discussed in Youngstown

Published: Thu, October 29, 2009 @ 4:45 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Even though rail service through the Mahoning Valley could be several years away, it’s evident many people are already on board.

Several dozen supporters of such an idea attended a grass-roots organizing session today at the Youngstown Club, 201 E. Commerce St. Hosting the 90-minute meeting were All Aboard Ohio and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.

The thrust of the gathering was to describe where things stand with respect to developing passenger-rail service connecting Cleveland, Youngstown and Pittsburgh, noted Kenneth Prendergast, All Aboard Ohio’s executive director.

I was under the impression that ODOT had no rail plans for the Mahoning Valley. It would be a economic plus for this area {unlike a casino in Cincinnati} in any event, even if it is several years "down the road". It would be interesting to hear what the Governor and Ms Molitoris {head of DOT} have to say about it.

In these bad economic times, where is the need for this. Is this to transport the drug dealers around town faster?

I say we run the rail line right past the Dirigible Plant and the Ronneburg Brewery Complex.

Who'd ever consider an advanced high speed rail system for passing through a dump like Youngstown? I'm sure the communist Democrat politicians will promise it to the sheeple who continue electing them.

A high speed rail line is needed to serve our fast paced airport . If it was run to the lakefront at Ashtabula then we could watch the Polar Bears on the lake ice when global warming is put under control .

Yea, Cleveland could send all their hoodlums to Y-town for some crime then they could get back on the train and return home with the spoils.

How many windmills will it take to run one of these?

If the upfront planning for this is the usual Local Political screw-up, I'd bet that the train tracks or land they use up or relocate for the possible V&M expansion would be the ones they'd need to make the high speed rail go through the area. It would be the typical Youngstown fiasco.

It can be used by the Youngstown families of prison inmates visiting their next of kin. Maybe our fanatical sport fans can go to Cleveland and Pittsburgh for a fun filled, boozey sport event. Or Mountaineer Park.

Not to mention all the pot holes, broken down railroad crossings and crime ridden neighbor hoods that you have travel through at some miserable time in the middle of that to get to the train station because the only time it would stop in Youngstown is 2:00am in the morning (Remember Amtrak?)

I heard It would create jobs, be a positive impact on our education system and it would help provide health care to those who do not have it.......did I miss any of the other campaign promises? I thought we had train service before and no one used it.....this would just be faster train service that no one would use? Wouldn't it hurt the busing we already have? The WRTA just finally started turning a profit, right? Maybe we could get it for Youngstown 2030! Maybe when the Browns and the Steelers play, people could travel through Youngstown and stop and see our jails and courthouses!

I have hopefully gathered that you're being sarcastic.

But, did you seriously hear that it would help provide health care to those who do not have it?

Ironic. This must be because it gets them to the emergency room even quicker, so they can rack up huge medical bills that we end up paying part of when we go to have a procedure done because its cost was inflated to make up for all of the people who didn't pay their bills as a result of also not paying for the drugs they got shot over and ended up in the hospital for in the first place.

Ya gotta love the Moaning Valley. B***h that the government does nothing for the valley or bring in any jobs and b***h when it does. What a bunch of losers.

Cambridge, how long did it FINALLY take Youngstown to come to agreement on the V&M expansion? I'd hate to see how long it would take for something like this to come into effect.

These big projects need to be done one at a time. Why do we really need a transit system like that around here? So people can take a train to the job that they don't have? Oh, but of course, I forgot. The high-speed rail will bring jobs to the valley! ... But, then again, the V&M expansion was/is supposed to, too. No one wanted the V&M expansion to happen though, because the "costs would outweigh the benefits." "It wouldn't be worth the price to the city of Youngstown and its tax payers just to bring about a few hundred measley jobs." At least V&M Star doesn't have as much of a chance of getting completely destroyed and vandalized like these trains would.

Only very few people ride the WRTA busses that we pay extra sales tax for, for cryin' out loud. What makes you think they're going to be able to fill the seats of a train, that would undoubtedly cost more tax dollars to operate and I'm sure a higher boarding fee than those busses. I'll tell you one thing, though -- if they do bring this train around, I hope its operators can conduct better than the WRTA drivers can drive.
