Two children remain in protective custody after Canfield police removed them from the home.

By ELISE FRANCO

Vindicator staff writer

CANFIELD — A city couple is charged with child endangering and cruelty to animals after two children and nine animals were removed from their home.

Canfield Detective Brian McGivern said the children, both boys ages 7 and 2, were placed in protective custody, and will remain there for at least 30 days. The animals were taken to the Mahoning County dog warden but did not survive.

He said the children, along with seven dogs and two cats, were taken from the home of Brian Spin, 38, and Betsy Spin, 32, of 535 Brookpark Drive.

Police found them living in deplorable conditions Thursday. McGivern said the house was filled with garbage, animal and human waste and mold.

“The entire house was completely uninhabitable,” he said. “It was like walking in two inches of maple syrup. That’s how saturated the rugs were with urine and feces.”

McGivern said police were called to the home after a woman driving by saw three dogs running loose on the street. When officers arrived at the residence, McGivern said they found Spin in the yard with the three dogs.

“These dogs were in bad shape,” he said. “When you walk in the house, your eyes start watering and you start coughing. It was a foul odor.”

McGivern said the children were in an upstairs bedroom with Betsy Spin’s mother Georgia Holowach. He said they were covered in bug bites and very dirty.

“They were filthy, very poor hygiene, but they were in good health,” he said. “The 2-year-old was still being breast fed by [Betsy Spin] every two hours.”

The older child was home-schooled, McGivern said. Spin worked from home, and his wife was unemployed.

The couple was forced to leave the residence and had been staying with family. They were brought to the Canfield Police Department on Tuesday afternoon, booked and released under the responsibility of their attorney.

They now face nine counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of child endangering. They are scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Court in Canfield at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

McGivern said the investigation continues.

The 4,596 square foot home, which is owned by Holowach, has a total market value of $344,600 and was built in 1967, according to the Mahoning County Auditor’s Web site.

McGivern said the Spins lived in the home through a land agreement.

About a half-dozen neighbors contacted Tuesday afternoon said they didn’t want to discuss the matter.

McGivern said it took the dog warden four days to find and remove all the animals.

“Trash was piled so high inside the house, and the animals were just running wild that he couldn’t just climb over it,” he said.

Dog Warden Dave Nelson said three dogs died en route to the pound, and the other six animals were euthanized because of their condition.

The dog warden found another dog Tuesday afternoon living inside a mattress in the back yard.

“They had mange all over their bodies, which caused extreme pain,” he said. “The sores they had caused bits of their ears to fall off because it rots the skin.”

Nelson said the animals ranged from 1 to 6 years old, and were extremely emaciated.

“This is in the top 10 of all the houses I’ve raided in the past 20 years,” he said. “It’s just bad. It’s beyond belief.”

It's difficult to fathom that none of the neighbors intervened on behalf of those poor children and animals. There had to be a horrendous stench emanating throughout the neighborhood, particularly during the heat of the summer months. It's likely these "neighbors" declined to be interviewed due to guilt and embarassment.

Kudos to whoever called on those dogs. Now those kids are out of that situation. People who neglect their animals typically neglect their kids. I'm sad those dogs died, but atleast their suffering is over. Clearly these two people were wither mentally illl or drug addicts. I'm going with addicts. Two things that piss me off are child abuse/neglect and animal abuse/neglect. If you cant properly care for them don't have em...Scumbags!!!!!!!!!!

The bigger problem is, WHERE do people go for help when their lives and homes get so far out of control??? Would YOU be able to ask for intervention when it's the FIRST 6 months of your living conditions deteriorating?? What about after 1 year?? What about 18 months and now the trash is overflowing?? Would you ask at 2 years, after carpets are urine soaked, trash piled high, kids out of control. WHERE would you start if it was YOU?? Lots of things contribute to such conditions: complications from pregnancy; drug or alcohol abuse; major depression (or post-partum depression); other mental illness... Most addicts and some mentally ill will not or cannot ask for help. So, when YOUR life deteriorates to this level, who would you ask for help, knowing that there is NO agency who would give practical-hands on help to get your home cleaned up, get you mental help and support, AND get your kids and animals back to health. There is NO PLACE that gives that kind of hands-on help. No one starts out to live in filth and crap. So, what if your life became so bad that you were living in deplorable conditions?? WHO would you call?? Good luck finding such help if you ever need it.

And, there's plenty of families living like this. Closed doors, closed blinds, everyone passes by, and the families keep quiet because of shame, embarrassment, fear....

Apparently you are somehow involved in this whole mess or just have no clue. You seem to be one of those people who find anywhere to place blame but the place blame belongs.

What ever happened to people helping themselves?
Couldn't they have turned the dogs/cats over to an animal shelter and clean up their own mess? How about feeding the pets? Do they need to ask for help to feed their pets? If they just lost their former home in 2007 as previously posted, then they had the chance to start over with this one and KEEP IT CLEAN! How about if they just kept the pets to the basement and outside? How about if they kept just one room clean enough for their children? You seem to be having a pitty party for these horrible parents and abuser of pets.

Maybe the authorities can charge them with neglect, cruelty to animals, child endangering, child abuse.....something has to stick and if you pile enough charges, something has to warrant jail time for more than an misdemeanor.

Filthy disgusting slobs. I hope the kids find a better environment to live in and the pets rest in peace.

Are you flipping kidding me? Kids, dogs and a grandmother that did nothing about it? What to hell? From the photos, the parents seem to be in pretty good shape unless those were photos from prior arrests. In this day and age there is no reason for anything of the sort. Mrs.Holowach is a former acquaintance and I would have never imagined that she would let this kind of thing go on with her beloved grandchildren. All 3 of those demented adults deserve serious prison time. Canfield, Youngstown or Boardman, doesn't matter. One never knows what happens behind closed doors. Home schooling is another joke!! You aren't smart enough to clean up dog poop, how are you going to educate your child? Did you attend parenting classes? You all have serious issues and really need to be taken out behind a barn and left for, well, maybe dead as your pets now are. How much longer before your children would have caught some horrible disease and died? Mrs.Holowach always bragged about Betsy, about how smart and wonderful she was. To bad her eyes weren't opened to the REAL person Betsy was/is. May God help all of you and see you through this disaster and may you NEVER get your children back!

Home schooling is not joke; public "education" is the joke.

The reason this happened in Canfield is because trash is everywhere today; this is 2009, not the 50's. Where did our morals go, and when do we get serious about re-instating American values before it's too late?

Of course, when the voters elect a Marxist anti-American Kenyan born foreigner and appoints simular communists, as well as pro child molesters, death panel advocates and organ harvarsters from terminally ill patients what can we expect. Mmm, mmm, mm, Barack Hussein Obama.

I am self-employed with 3 energetic kids. I barely have time to finish daily work responsibilities, let alone keep the house clean, get the kids fed, help with homework, etc... Because of the constant, seemingly never-ending chores and duties, I have been depressed, still my responsibilities for my family were met.

My house may not be sterile, but I make sure for the health of my family that it is clean. Which is why, no matter how diligently the kids beg and plead, I refuse to allow them to have a pet of any kind! Not even a gold fish!! I can NOT take responsibility for one more living creature! People, no matter what situation, MUST take responsibility for their own decisions.

Even though they have become the popular excuses lately, drug addiction and depression are not valid reasons to have your 2-year-old baby wade through shi* and pis*.

This is heartbreaking. I can hardly breath just thinking about what those animals and children went through. Where did these people get all these animals? I mean if you can't take care of one why would you bring 10 more home? I wonder how many already died there--and what they did with their bodies. God only knows. The neighbors had to have seen something at some point--if a person driving by noticed how bad the dogs looked--surely the neighbors did. There is no excuse for anyone not reporting animal cruelty. PERIOD!!! May those poor animals rest in peace. We can't be so self absorbed that we don't notice something so horrific right next door!!!!!

Oh,why am I not surprised that Pro-Conservaterican somehow tied this totally un-related incident to the election of our president. Are you sure you didn`t visit that home, Pro-Conservaterican and sniff some fecal fumes to rot your mind, not that it needs any help,as evidenced by your posts here.Anyone who is new to the vindy.com blog, rest assured that Pro-Conservaterican is the all knowing defender of truth and the American way.At least in his mind.lol!!! He`s sort of like Superman for the teabaggers.LOL!!!!By the way,Pro-Conservaterican,I notice you never answered the question on another post whether you considered the right-wing whack jobs that kill doctors over abortion as murderers that deserve the death penalty. Are you afraid to answer that question, because you may disappoint the very few people that post on here who consider you rational? And if you want to talk about politicians that should be called scumbags, please, please don`t leave out DICK Cheney. And throw his little girl Liz into the mix also. What a couple of sorry excuses for patriots. And how many deferments did the old chicken hawk DICK receive during Vietnam again? Oh yea, 5................

Two inchews of maple syrup. It sounds just like New Orleans, the very city that the Bush's thought was just fine and couldn't see a problem with. Come to think of it, they should have named the flooded part of New Orleans after George W., it was just like him. Very shallow and full of crap.

Hope 4thevalley and his allies; do you think that filthy, lazy, irresponsible couple is conservative or socialists like you people? Do you think they voted for Obama and the party for losers? I'm sick because I demand a man support his wife and children? YOU need help, not I!

Axle, still whinning about the aborton doc, Tiller the Killer, being murdered by a "conservative" nut. What do you call someone who murdered 60k unborn babies for money, a humanitarian? Many by the savage, agonizing method of partial birth. I did answer that question previously? Did you miss, ignore it or did all your crocodile tears for the baby murdering, coward doc distort you vision as bad as you morals, if that's even possible?

Najjj, are you a suffering from the same mental disorder as Hitler by mentioning standing behind an elephant's posterior with acute diarrhea?

Socialists want the masses, conservatives, to support them and their families.

Conservatives support themselves and their families.

Conservative have Judeo-Christian beliefs.
Socialists believe in their god government.

Socialists are anti-capital punishment and pro murder of the innocent unborn, often by savage partial birth abortion.

Conservatives are pro capital punishment and pro life.

Socialists are for excessive government regulation, except for abortion mills.

Conservatives are for less government regulation, except for abortion mills.

PenquinBird, why didn't the citizens of New Orleans help themselves like the Amish in Alabama who were devastated even worse? laziness? Mississippi was devastated worst than The Big Easy as well. The difference, the Alabama and Mississippi residents went to work and didn't rely on Bush and big government. Of course, they're conservatives and not lazy socialists like the New Orleans losers who want YOU to do their work while they loot, rape and murder. And whine.

This house is between where I live and my daughter lives. Many cars are in that driveway...at different times...what does that say. The home has been negleted...trim, yard, toys laying all around. I personally never seen anyone outside the home. The house was up for sale at one time...maybe 10 yrs ago and the home looked great. I don't know if it was sold or not. It's sad about the dogs but people come first...children and what is the mental condition of the grandmother. Come to find out the grandmother was owner with husband in cornersburg at one time. This couple should not be aloud to have custody of their children and as an Ombudsman for residents in nursing home...the grandmother must be checked out completely both physical and mentally. ProAmerican,
If you knew the FACTS about New Orleans you would realize that the citizens were able to get through the hurricane and they were mainly effected by the levies breaching. Since New Orleans is below sea level and the levies failed around 11 p.m. when most people were sleeping, people were unaware of the problem until the next morning when they were already surrounded by flood water. Now let me pass this tidbit of information onto you. "WATER DOES NOT RUN UPHILL!"
Bush did NOTHING for his eight years in office. Oh wait, I almost forgot, he and Cheney were busy turning CIA facts into fiction so they could create their own war in Iraq. They were busy commiting treaon by revealing the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame and her husband Joe WIlson. They were busy securing "NO BID" contracts for DICK's old company Haliburton. They were busy securing tax breaks for their country club schmoozing pals. They were busy making sure all their Saudi friends were able to secure safe passage back to their homeland after 9/11, they were busy bankrupting the wealthiest country on the face of the earth.
Sorry U.S. citizens of Louisiana, Bush and DICK were BUSY!

So PenguinBird are you inferring that Bush and Cheney were responsible for this biohazard in Canfield also ? I wonder if there was any dog crap was washed out of the houses in New Orleans by the hurricane ?

BTW as a true gesture of compassion a fund raising effort should be started to buy a large commercial pressure washer to be used on the Canfield house . A septic service company ( AKA HONEY DIPPER ) could then pump the effluent out of the basement . A chlorine gas treatment could then eliminate any residual bacteria . Let's restore dignity and sterility back to that old house .

No Stan, but apparently you think the bio-hazard in Canfield has a link to the Obama health care reform bill. I suppose you support the reform bill presented by the neo-con republican party. Oh wait, that's right, they don't have one.

As for Brian and Betsy Spin, it sounds like they have the same prescription drug plan as Rush Limbaugh. They can all sit around the same rehab facility together and listen to some great music, like, "Who Let the Dogs Out."

There is an organization that can help animals in distress such as in this case. I own several businesses that deal with homes and properties like this residence, which is only a couple blocks from my home. Unfortunately, most of the time when we arrive to "clean out" a property, it is too late. We have found pets left behind by distressed families that have suffered and died because people did not know what to do with them. Perhaps the mental anguish caused by situations like these do not allow clear thought. We unfortunatly encounter situations like this 90% of the time. Dirty diapers and all types of filthy living conditions are not isolated to this situation. Like the civil servants that had to discard their clothes, we have had to remove and disgard our clothing many times after completing work in "homes" like this. I have taken to buy the cheapest shoes available so that I can throw them into the dumpster prior to leaving the property. The worst case was in Hubbard, where the family actually kept a pig in the basement. If you know of people like this or care to have an alternative to the pound, I would proudly recommend that you contact
www.NoPawsLeftBehind.org
a non profit rescue network operated nation wide by caring folks that will gladly attempt to rescue pets that are left behind. My companies support their work, proudly display their logo on our equipment, and have found them to be a first class operation. I own a dog, I am not in any way an animal activist or extremist, but after you have seen first hand the suffering that pets endure when a family goes under, organizations like No Paws Left Behind start to make sense. We will not bid to clean this property. But we will bid competitvely to demolish it.

If something isn't done, you might as well add two more people (the children) to the long list of screwed up people in this area that we'll be dealing with in the upcoming years.

I got laid off almost a year ago. I was not with the company long enough to get unemployment. I have been looking for about six months now. You have some nerve calling people without jobs "lazy". As for footing the bill, you aren't. We get no assitance even though we are eligible. So before you insult everyone, stop and think.

I'm well aware of the unemployment situation. TRUST ME. My family is directly affected by it. I never once criticized those who were unemployed through no fault of their own. Perhaps I should have been a little more specific in my original comment. Then again, perhaps you both could have not jumped the gun and assumed that I was trying to attack people who have unfortunately lost the job that they at one point had.

I'm not a moron; I know that the people on unemployment right now were people that at one time had a job. I'm talking about the people who never worked in the first place.

I'm getting at the people who choose welfare as a career and a way of life. The people who do nothing with their lives except procreate without financial and mental stability. The ones that have ten kids who taxpayers support because they won't. THOSE are the people I'm referring to.

Reread the article again. Reread about the feces, the urine, the kids, the odor.

These "parents" have gone to a place that is beyond simple rehab. I have known people that abuse drugs or alcohol (and had kids) but they don't live like that. There is more to these two than what you are willing to admit.

Again, these are not "parents," they have kids, but DO NOT confuse them with those who have kids AND are parents.

Actually - yeah, people without jobs ARE lazy if they're able to work and don't.

Forget cuing the violin for the 'poor' unemployed. There's always options. There's changing industries. Doing menial work you wouldn't normally do and working your way up some other ladder. And *gasp* going back to school and learning about some other field.

If you're still in a rough spot after, say, a year, its YOUR fault, not the fault of the "economy." industries grow and die - that's life. Either you change, or you get pulled under.

Suck it up.

Are you going to pay for me to go to school? And for a sitter for my children? As for menial work, two fast food places turned me down because they said I was overqualified to work there. They were afraid I would get bored or disgusted and quit soon after starting. I guess it is my fault that I didn't prentend to be a moron at the interviews.

112 yix2k (16 comments)posted 14 days, 17 hours ago

phantomphan09, haven't you ever heard of a Pell Grant or online classes? Student loans? Google the term Fafsa. You apply on the government website for money for school. Shop around for schools - find out which one has a decent tuition rate and has a degree program you want in a relatively stable industry (ie: not web design) - check Baker College (MI) first because it may be the one of the more affordable ones out there.

Then you can work on school work and still not have to worry about a babysitter. Look at that: problem solved.

If acting like a total dipsh*t at an interview, and un-padding your resume or not including information on your application helps you get a job, then that's what you do. Worst comes to worse, go work at West. They'll tell you flat out they'll hire literally anyone who can type without drooling on the keyboard. It's a terrible job, pays in parakeet food, and their computer systems are embarrassingly under-maintained, but it's a paycheck.

Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. These people just lost their house not long ago, he was self employed, she was unemployed. In Niles, there was a doctor and a nurse who, over a period a year, left nearly 30 cats and 2 dogs in a house after they moved out. The house was one giant toilet, flea infested, cats dying from the fleas, while they came to feed and water them once every week or two. They hired a neighbor to help them take care of the cats finally, but never paid her, and the doctor ended up locking all the cats out of the house so he could gut it, remodel it and rent it out. These people are horrible. Then he built his nurse girlfriend another house, and we hear she's hording there, too.
