It’s a bad, bad plan
EDITOR:
The quote by Dan Gilbert, the force behind Issue 3 and casino gambling in Ohio, says it all: “But you can’t go back and change it.” This constitutional amendment is a bad option whether you support or despise gambling.
It is very critical that those voters who are eager to bring Las Vegas-style casinos to the state consider how passage of this issue will hobble any attempt to modify, expand or even terminate the structure it puts in place. It is very troublesome to me that by amending our state constitution, the bedrock upon which our state governance is based, we will severely restrict our ability to respond to changing needs and interests in the future.
Putting aside all other arguments for or against: Issue 3 is an unwise way to allow casino gambling in Ohio. No amount of money or promise of jobs is worth the risk inherent in amending the state constitution in favor of a very limited — and limiting — plan when you realize that you “... can’t go back and change it.” I sincerely hope Ohio voters will overwhelmingly vote no on Issue 3.

THIS CRAP IS SO SICKING,THE LIES GOT TO STOP,THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN IN THIS STATE,THE MONEY THE STATE STAND'S TO RECEIVE WILL GO FAR IN THE WAY AS TO HELP THIS STATE WITH WELL NEEDED MONEY,WE NEED A CASINO OR TWO TO TURN THINGS AROUND IN OHIO...VOTE YES
How about a little context Tim? I read that quote too - Gilbert was talking about how if they could go back, maybe they'd consider adding a casino in Youngstown in addition to casinos in the four largest cities.
Ultimately, an amendment of the Constitution makes it clear once and for all that casino gambling is legal in Ohio. That's why it was proposed this way. As voters, we can agree with casino gambling and the details this plan has put forth or not agree. If approved, any change we might want to make in the future would go through a similar process and would ultimately be our call by way of a vote.
I like this plan. I'm so sick of watching money leave this state for casinos in other states. Let's keep the money here in Ohio to benefit Ohioans. Yes on 3!
Jumanji - For the third time, somebody really needs to explain to me why we need to add a 12 page amendment to the state constitution to accomplish this; in effect, legislating inside the constitution. If an amendment is necessary, why don’t we consider a 19 word constitutional amendment that reads “Gambling will be permitted in the State of Ohio at the discretion of the State Legislature and County Governments.”; and then let the State Legislature and local governments do their jobs?
The 12 page monstrosity of an amendment proposed details the exact addresses of the four casinos. It also goes into painstaking detail regarding operation. To write this into the constitution is lunacy. Is it not the job of the State Legislature to determine laws? Why are they not deciding if Ohio laws can be changed to allow casino gambling? Why are local governments not deciding if they will or will not permit casinos in their neighborhoods, and where? If we are going to allow casino gambling, why are we not allowing competing interests and locations, to provide the best business opportunities? Why do we need to put this 12 page steaming pile of legal mumbo-jumbo directly into the constitution?
I still have every intention of voting against this, just because it is still a stupid thing to write into the constitution.
I can care less about the amendment crap. I just want more jobs here and if this is what's going to get them here, then I'm all for it. And to those of you that are rich enough or have that much job security in your own employment and who oppose this, ponder this: you won't have to pick up the welfare bill for at least 34,000 people anymore. Since all I hear on these comments is how all the welfare cases are bringing down our society, then at least thousands of people won't contribute to that when these jobs are developed. All of you that are up on your high horse, which are probably the ones who spend their money in out-of-state casinos, your horse eventually gets old and dies.
