ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Three Ohio University pranksters have been fined hundreds of dollars for barricading a dormitory adviser in his room twice, first with rope and later with a chain and padlock.
Nineteen-year-old Andrew Upperman and 20-year-old Daniel Rambacher, both of North Canton, and 19-year-old Thomas Grasso of Chagrin Falls pleaded no contest this week to misdemeanor charges including criminal mischief and unlawful restraint.
The now former OU students were convicted by an Athens County Municipal Court judge, who ordered them to pay fines ranging from $750 to $1,100 and each serve 100 hours of community service.
The dorm resident assistant was not harmed when he was trapped the two times in May.

I see that this was a high dollar prank .
Yet every year when the clocks are set back there are riots and burning couches and cars in the streets. Some consistency might be in order.
A prank like this actually isn't all that unusual in college...one time the guys in my hall "pennied" me in (pennies are stuck in the door jam, preventing the door from opening). I ended up having to get out through the window. Of course I wasn't too happy about it, but I would never have pushed for criminal charges to be filed against them. The bad thing about those charges isn't the fine, but that they now have a criminal record that could bar them from many jobs.
I suspect it might have been let pass had it not been done twice. We don't know how high off of the ground this room was, perhaps using the window was impractical?
Using a lock and chain the second time made it non-trivial to release the dorm advisor without the key, where a rope can be cut more easily.
In this case, I do not feel bad for the perps, their future or their criminal and academic records. Actions have consequences, and when more people learn this, perhaps there will be less stupid actions.
