COLUMBUS — A state lawmaker panel has approved a $2 million-plus loan to a Trumbull County school district placed in fiscal emergency late last week.
McDonald School District will have to pay back the advance within the next two fiscal years.
The state auditor’s office recently reviewed the district’s financial records and determined it was about $2 million short for covering costs through June 2010.
The state loan will cover the projected deficit. The district will have to cut costs or pass a levy to bring in more funds in order to pay back the loan and eliminate future budget deficits. It has a 4.9-mill emergency five-year operating levy on the November ballot, which would generate about $260,000 annually.

This Situation Makes Me Sick. The Children Are The Ones Who Are Going To Be Affected The Most Out of This. The Superintendant, Treasurer & Board Members Are The Ones To Blame. How They Let This Happen Is Beyond Forgiveable. If The Levy Doesn't Pass, The Children & Teachers Will Suffer. The People Who Live In McDonald Better Wake Up & Realize This Levy Needs To Pass. If It Doesn't, Things Will Only Get Worse Down The Road. Look At Youngstown. Hopefully The People Who Live There Wont Let Something Like That Happen To Their Schools. We'll See If The Residents There Are Smart or Not !!!! Hopefully For The Kids Sake They Are.
As an alum, this makes me sad. It's a shame the village doesn't demand more accountability from their public servants - school, village, elected or not. Once the checks start bouncing, clearly there are problems. How many people suspected a problem and never said anything? Does the treasurer still have his job? The superintendent? I suppose when you're on your way out the door anyway, the current situation doesn't much matter to you. Pass the levy - and then demand more. Throw out the school board and start over. Clearly they're not doing their jobs, either. Get people in the jobs that actually care about the school, instead of the status that comes with the position. That said, good luck finding that in McDonald. I'd guess you've managed to run just about everyone that fits that bill out of town, or at least squashed their spirit to where they know people don't care and won't waste the time. Glad I moved.
McDAlum, your comments are right on. I think that there are a lot of people that want the entire board and administration to resign. Clearly, nobody was doing their jobs. I have to totally agree with your comment about finding good people to run for office in McDonald. Who would want to run for office knowing that there is a faction out there that would work relentlessly to destory your reputation? It's just not worth it to some, which is a shame for us all.
