Campbell police plan to increase presence

Published: Fri, October 16, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m.

STAFF REPORT

CAMPBELL — The school district continues to offer counseling, and the police are planning to increase their presence after a girl was raped Monday while walking to school.

The 15-year-old, a 10th-grader at Campbell Memorial High School, was abducted at knife-point on Tremble Avenue near 13th Street around 7 a.m. a few streets away from her home. She was taken to an abandoned house on Gordon Avenue, where the rape occurred.

After a daylong investigation, Campbell police arrested Charles E. Hudson, 55, who has no permanent address. He was arrested at 144 Reed Ave., an abandoned house where he stayed, police said.

Schools superintendent Thomas Robey said earlier this week the district offered counseling to the girl, her family and her friends. He said the district is still making counseling available and has extra people available if needed next week.

Robey also said the district is working with police to ensure students’ safety.

He would not discuss what security measures are being taken.

Campbell officer John Gulu said Thursday that there won’t be any additional manpower available during the hours when children are walking back and forth to school, but police will be “making ourselves more visible.”

Hudson, who is in the Mahoning County jail, is charged with rape and kidnapping, and his preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.

A little too late if you ask me. It's worth noting that this creep was Fugtive of the Week 2 years ago, was arrested in his Reed Avenue home after someone tipped off the police. I don't know what came of it after that but apparently this guy has been let loose to prey on innocent victims. "Making ourselves more visible"...what a joke... how about keeping criminals like this locked up for good so they can't rape children on their way to school???

How about patrolling the streets sometime instead of sitting around doing nothing all day?

Lets blame the police CMHS84. Lets see there is two cops on the road in Campbell for a crime rate that is probably second highest in Mahoning County behind Youngstown. Thats right the Campbell Police sit around and do nothing is just a ignorant comment from someone that doesnt know what is going on in the city of Campbell. Im sure they have arrested this guy how many times? I would say this is the fault of the Mahoning County court system which is a joke. How many crimes do you have to commit before you actually get time in jail or prison?

My blame does not lie with the police. I just feel like their response is akin to closing the barn door AFTER the cows have escaped. The fact that this guy was a fugitive, arrested and then let loose to later victimize a child is appalling. Merely stating that the there is something wrong with our justice system if this is allowed to happen.
