Sidewalks are being neglected
EDITOR:
My concern is the neglect of the sidewalks on the 4000 block of Glenwood Avenueand the lack of maintenance of same. I see the bridge being worked on and some new sidewalks being installed. The waste comes when the funds to build new are borrowed and the existing structures are neglected due to lack of funds or the inability to plan and procure their care. I am sure this will be true of the new structure as well.
I live on Devonshire we have a sidewalk that is covered with weeds, trees and grass. Residents can’t walk their dogs on the sidewalk; they have to use the street and it is also in disrepair.
These items are really bad and they deserve attention. I mow and maintain the north entrance of Devonshire when I have the ability to, but because I am on a fixed income I cannot do it on a regular basis. The lines of communication with county, township or responsible individuals are not accessible because one says the other has responsibility.

That stretch of sidewalk was cleaned up by the County back in 1998 after months of "communication" between the Township's administrator, Curt Seditz, and Marilyn Kenner of the County Engineer's office. This sidewalk was brought up when funds were used to pour a sidewalk along Glenwood Ave. behind the Boardman Plaza after a young boy was killed. The question was 'why are we building new sidewalks when we can't take care of the ones we already have,' the one near Devonshire in particular.
Now history repeats itself with the new sidewalks being poured at Glenwood and Overhill and the neglected sidewalk right across the street. Kathy Miller's re-election slogan is "Because she cares." Apparently she didn't care about this thousand feet of sidewalk but made sure she took advantage of the photo op next to the Recovery Act sign on groundbreaking day for this project.
Mister Moore - the homeowner or property owner is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the sidewalks on their property - NOT the township, county, or anybody else. You should know the law before you start demanding someone else do it.
NoBS you are right. It is the homeowner's responsibility to maintain the sidewalks and devil strip.
I'm waiting for someone to try and blame this problem on Bush.
I feel your point, Dick. Let's concentrate on relocating all the dudes sleeping on said sidewalk first, cool?
It's only a requirement for adjacant property owners to maintain sidewalks because the City Chartter says so . The Charter should be changed , & we will have better sidewalks & more walkable & liveable communities with less crime - like the municipalities which accept sidewalks are a general community resource ,,like roads & parks.
If the City was transparent about where it spends its $41 million budget , I'm sure it could eliminate enough waste to pay for respectable sidewalk maintenance ..
Pay attention! The sidewalk in question is in BOARDMAN!
In most areas, it is true that the homeowner is responsible for the sidewalk. Why would homeowners on streets without the benefit of a sidewalk have to chip in for maintenance of someone else's neighborhood asset? When we were building, we were assessed extra for the sidewalk, and we were aware that maintenance was on us.
I'm thinking that the letter writer is referencing a sidewalk that is not adjacent to private property.
