100 watch, but no one offers clues to police in Warren homicide

Published: Sun, October 4, 2009 @ 7:45 p.m.

By David Skolnick

WARREN — Despite about 100 witnesses, Warren police have little information on a shooting that left a 20-year-old city man dead.

“No one’s coming forward” to provide details of the murder of Derek Thrash about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, said police Sgt. Dan Mason.

Thrash of Southern Boulevard was standing outside the Big Apple Convenience Food Market on Youngstown Warren Road when he was gunned down, Mason said.

“A large group of people are outside there every weekend,” he said.

But after multiple shots were fired at Thrash and before police arrived, the group — including the murder victim — were gone, Mason said.

Thrash was taken by friends about 30 minutes to an hour after being shot to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, where he died, Mason said.

Police hadn’t made an arrest as of late Sunday and have no suspects in the murder.

Thrash’s death represents the city’s eighth homicide of 2009.

Why weren't police on the scene within an hour ?

They were probably called by the hospital .

It is my opinion; whether the police arrived within minutes or a later time, is mute. What is unbelivable, not one witness offers assistance.

Just goes to show they are acting like nothing more than pathetic animals.

Oops pj...there's a big difference between "mute" and "moot." (A friend is fond of saying: "That's a mute point." Excuse me: "Do you mean that point can't talk?")

And yes CCADTI, they're "acting like...pathetic animals" because that's what they've become. And we---as a society---are a party to it, pun intended.

Gee, it's 2:30 a.m. Shall I sleep, do some crack and/or meth, stay at my crib with my trim, or go to the convenience store and discuss world politics, and maybe see a murder and pretend nothing happened?

It was the time for celebrating . The first of the month had rolled around and the money was flowing again . There was plenty of crack and plenty of booze . Soon the money will be spent and the robberies will pick up . Others will then be the target for drug money to soothe their spirits .

The police should not spend too much time on this case. If it is obviously okay with the community then ignore it. The victim's side will retaliate and everyone will be even. It is the norm

There is definitely two types of societies, and this validates it. "Fences are put up to keep the honest people out."

This is so very sad and disturbing. Over 100 people seen someone being murdered and yet noone can come forward or comment. Makes you wonder if these people are just too used to this lifestyle, granted i don't live there but i would be horrifed to witness this. Do they not realize this is not how normal people behave? I just don't understand ...
