Ursuline, Mooney both advance to state

Published: Sat, November 28, 2009 @ 12:01 a.m.

STAFF REPORT

The Valley’s two best football teams will play for state championships next Friday.

Unbeaten and top-ranked Cardinal Mooney (14-0) defeated Steubenville 45-7 on Friday night at Fawcett Stadium, advancing to the Division III state title game next Friday at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.

The Cardinals will play Columbus DeSales (11-3), who lost a 21-14 decision to Cardinal Mooney at Stambaugh Stadium on Sept. 4. That game is scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m.

On Friday night DeSales beat Wyoming 24-7.

Mooney will be trying for its seventh state championship overall and third for coach P.J. Fecko.

At 3 p.m. next Friday, Ursuline (10-3) will play Coldwater (13-1) in the Div. V state championship game at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

On Friday the Fighting Irish won for the eighth time in their last nine games, 48-6 over West Lafayette Ridgewood.

That game will be a rematch of the 2000 state final in Div. IV, won by Ursuline, 49-37.

The Fighting Irish are in the state final for the third straight year. Ursuline to Maria Stein Marion Local 20-14 in 2007 and defeated Findlay Liberty-Benton 21-0 last year for its second state championship.

these two programs play div-1 teams all year. Then get in the playoffs and play smaller schools with limited talent. The OHSA needs to make these dominate programs play in a leauge of there own, in a catholic league of there own, cmon its only fair. Just look at the past state champions most of them are catholic schools from div 1 thru div 6

jdillon I agree!!!!! Its ridiculous!!! That poor little community of Ridgewood, they put together a true Div 5 team and then come up against the well-combined team of ursuline. Does uhs just put that part out of their minds or what? If they want a Div.5 state championship that bad, God bless them.

Really, in a state semi-final football game wouldn't you expect the games to be highly competitive and a little closer in score? These teams are good enough to make it to the state semi-finals and then they get anihilated by the catholic school playing down in division size. What a joke! How can you honestly get excited about winning this way? Yeah, it is a joke, like Ohio State playing YSU. Don't know what the answer is but this is rediculous. I was hoping to watch a highly competitive game last night and it was a blow out from the beginning. Ursuline and Mooney keep telling yourselves that you are just that good. Let's see you guys play schools like yourselves from other parts of the country and see how great you are. Get in the Kirk Herbstreet classic and play someone from Texas or Florida and lets see if you win 48-7.

Steubenville beat Massillon. Massillon plays in one of the Division 1 semi-finals this evening. Steubenville handed Woodland Hills of Pittsburgh its only loss of the season. Woodland Hills is one of the best AAAA public school teams in PIAA. Mooney defeated Pittsburgh Gateway rather handily two years ago in the Hebstreit Classic. I have lived in FL and now reside in the western US. CMHS could compete well no matter the competition.

treb77, this is the best idea I've heard in a long while.

Can't you just be happy that valley teams are competing for state championships? Mooney and Ursuline play in the division they're told to play in. They have no choice -- they cannot play up. Mooney has won in every division they've been placed in. I know for a fact that if Mooney could play DI -- they'd love it. That would mean their enrollment would be double what it is now. It is the Y-town mentality to be jealous of success especially if it is your neighbor's success.

NVEAU makes a good point. I bet they would love to double the students and have even more athletes. But you people would still complain.

"does UHS just put that out of their minds or what?" Put what out of their minds? The kids dont make the system, they play in it. Distorted view point I say.
