Dayton wants to raze bridge that draws the homeless

Published: Wed, November 18, 2009 @ 12:05 p.m.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Officials in one Ohio city want a railroad company to tear down an unused train trestle bridge where homeless people live in tents.

Dayton city engineers have been examining the bridge with the Norfolk Southern Railway Corp.

Rudy Husband, spokesman for the Norfolk, Va.-based railroad, says city officials recently brought the situation to its attention and that the company is exploring various options.

Police say numerous tents have popped up on the bridge in recent years.

Forty-year-old Cindy Dant has been living in a tent on the bridge for nine months. She says she needs surgery on her back and help finding an affordable place to live.
