Mooney defeats Hubbard 55-0 November 13, 2009

  Ursuline Vs. Liberty Benton

Ursuline will travel to Aurora to play Cuyahoga Heights.

VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT

The Cardinal Mooney and Poland high football teams will be playing close to home when they meet for a state semifinal berth.

Ursuline’s team, which has been on the road for much of the 2009 season, has another road trip west.

The Mahoning Valley’s three remaining football teams will play in regional finals on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

At Austintown Fitch Falcon Stadium, undefeated Mooney (12-0), the region’s top seed, will take on All-American Conference Red Tier co-champion Poland (10-2) in the Division III Region 9 final. Poland is seeded second in the region.

At Aurora High Stadium in Geauga County, Ursuline (8-3) will play Cuyahoga Heights (12-0) in the Div. V Region 17 final.

The winners will advance to Nov. 27 state semifinal games.

“We’re excited,” said Poland coach Mark Brungard, who added that his squad assumed that the game would be played at Fitch.

“For two local teams, it’s a great venue,” Brungard said Sunday in a break from a coaching strategy session. “We had success there in the past in playoff games.”

Commenting on the support given the Bulldogs by their fans, Brungard agreed that anyone wanting a seat should arrive long before kickoff.

Poland won the Division III state title in 1999.

The Cardinals are trying to win their third state crown in six seasons. In Div. IV, they won in 2004 and 2006, and finished state runners-up in 2005 and 2007.

Mooney’s regular-season schedule included three area teams: Boardman (23-17), Warren Harding (31-6) and Ursuline (27-22).

“Their record speaks for itself,” Brungard said of the Cardinals. “To have the schedule they have and to win every game, obviously, they are tremendous. You don’t see many weaknesses up and down the lineup.

“They have great depth,” Brungard said. “Defensively, they are active and don’t stay blocked.”

Poland’s losses were to Steubenville (24-13) in Week 7 and Canfield (16-0) in Week 10.

“To be in a regional final certainly is one of our goals,” Brungard said. “We competed with Steubenville but the Canfield loss was disappointing.

“But to be playing in Week 13, we’re very pleased,” Brungard said. “Our kids have played hard and done what we’ve asked.”

Poland and Mooney each have wins over Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. The Cardinals won 34-9 in Week 8 while the Bulldogs opened the playoffs with a 38-14 win over LeBron James’ alma mater.

The Bulldogs and Cardinals also played Hubbard. Poland won the season opener, 24-13, while Mooney ended Hubbard’s season last Friday with a 55-0 blowout.

Cuyahoga Heights, which shut out six of its 10 regular-season opponents, has the Region 17 top seed. The Irish were seeded third.

Ursuline’s other losses were to Pittsburgh Central Catholic (49-22) in Week 2 at Wheeling, W.Va., and Mentor Lake Catholic (35-21) in Week 3. Friday, Lake Catholic defeated Canfield 31-24 to advance to the Div. II Region 5 final.

Ursuline is competing for its third crown in 10 seasons.

The Irish won the Div. IV title in 2000 and the Div. V championship in 2008. The Irish were Div. V state runners-up in 2007.

I dont understand how you can say Mooney played teams that didnt give them a challenge or were "soft". Maybe u should look at the schedule because you obviously failed to look at it before your post... Mooney play 6 teams that made the playoffs. Of those 6, 4 are still playing. In fact, Poland defeated quite convincingly I may add 1 of those regular season playoff opponents.

Recruiting from 3 counties? The roster doesn't show that!

9 starters from St Charles, 4 miles from Mooney
2 starters from St Christines, 3 miles from Mooney
1 starter from St Luke's, 2.5 miles from Mooney

Should I continue? Because all the other starters are also from Schools within 6 miles from Mooney.

Devil and Mooney,
As a 1983 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School I was initially determined to remain silent as you presented your argument for a rearrangement of the OHSAA classifications based on public or parochial status. You are entitled to your opinions on this issue. If you are truly dedicated to these changes I would advise that you engage the OHSAA in substantive negotiations after you rally state wide support for your cause. I doubt this will ever occur as it is so much easier to anonymously stir-the-pot in the blogosphere rather than actually achieve a tangible goal.

I must admit you have cajoled me into a response. You disparaged the quality of a parochial education as ordinary. You implied that the athletes and students of CMHS and UHS are no more or even less prepared for career success than any other local high school student. I cannot leave these accusations unchallenged. I offer the following examples humbly rather than with arrogance. I offer these examples as a rebuttal to the ignorance of your previous inferences. Though I will speak only of my classmates, teammates and friends I am supremely confident of similar levels of achievement in every graduating class. The 1983 classes of CMHS and UHS count among their graduates a nationally regarded orthopedic surgeon, a strength & conditioning coach and assistant athletic director of an Ivy League university, a state sales manager for an athletic apparel company, a Boardman fire fighter, a master sommelier, two Valley dentists, a local landscape architect, an ATF special agent, a nationally regarded coach at a NCAA FBS program, a state director of the ACLU, a regional vice president for one of the largest retail developers in the country, a nationally recognized finance lecturer and educator, and the chief designer of automobiles for a major automotive manufacturer. This very abridged list accounts for a miniscule percentage of the total 1983 graduates of CMHS and UHS yet it provides definitive indication of the quality of their parochial education and experience. These are the leaders of their respective professions and vocations, your community and your country.

In the future please focus your efforts, as ill-conceived as they maybe, on an attempt to separate the athletics of public and parochial high schools. Please keep your witless opinions about the quality of a Cardinal Mooney or Ursuline education and the potential of their graduates to yourself.

One of my best friends was one such "failure" as you stated it, but as you have consistently done in your tiresome tirades you redirect the debate to suit your opinions and judgments. I am sure you can find many examples of successful graduates from the1983 classes of all the Valley high schools just as you can find examples of CMHS or UHS graduates who did not achieve their full potential or worse. I never said anything to the contrary. I was rebutting your assertion that a parochial education was less effective than a public education. You further asserted that CMHS and UHS athletes were not capable students and attended these high schools solely for athletics. Again, you speak as if you had some sort of definitive proof. I provided just a few examples of the possible thousands to the contrary.

It is no surprise you claim a fear and misunderstanding of the pride most CMHS and UHS graduates feel for their respective alma mater. This pride arises from being a part of something bigger than one’s self. Sadly, I can not believe you have ever been part of something bigger than yourself. Your writing reveals an enormous lack of self-worth and confidence hence your constant confrontational stance and personalizing of what should be an objective discussion. Perhaps a few seasons with Don Bucci or Dick Angle during your formative teen years would have provided an opportunity for a different outcome.

Mooney1993,
Everytime I read your post on here they are ALWAYS negative! You talk about "recruiting"... blah blah blah... same story from you. Then when someone mentions Open Enrollment you state that it is strictly meant for "academic" purposes. Well that is untrue considering that Poland has pulled Patton from Campbell. Or how about when Poland won state in 99? Their best athlete, Perry, was from Lowellville. I think we are all sick of hearing about "recruiting".

Mooney1993,
Yours is an argument...told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I wish you well as you satisfy your ego posting with such anonymous bravado. By the way I was in fact recruited. I was called by my district public high school football and baseball coach. Please continue your blustering my friend.

Mooney has the best coaches in the valley and have they have the college connections and reputations that get D1 scholarships.

Watch a football on Saturdays and they are all over the field.

In the end players that go there are better off for it so it doesn't matter where they come from. It is about what is best for that kid.

The kid in Iowa "probably" never would have been there if not for his time at Mooney making him the best he can be.

How can we argue with the results and the betterment of lives they have been giving to young people.
