Training sessions offered for women, minorities who want to start businesses

Published: Sun, November 15, 2009 @ 4:35 p.m.

Those who complete the program can apply for a loan to start or maintain a business.

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority and the Youngstown Area Development Corp. have developed entrepreneurial training classes designed to spur business ventures for minorities and women.

The initial orientation session for the first 12 people selected for the program will be at 5:30 p.m. today at the YMHA Resource Center at Westlake Terrace, 976 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The workshop will contain an overview of what is required to start a business, and the content will include topics such as identifying a business, the necessity of business insurance and developing a business plan.

After the orientation, the training classes consist of 10 sessions twice a week for six weeks and will be tailored to meet the desired business development interest of each trainee, said William M. Carter, YADC executive director.

Trainees will have classes on marketing a product or service, understanding federal state and local taxes, contracting with federal, state and local government agencies, and protecting and financing a business.

What a joke ! OBAMAMAGIC is shutting down private long term businesses en masse . There are now plenty of unemployed in our area with no money to spend . What chance does a new startup business have ? Basically none ! Crack dealers are the only ones thriving !

This program is better than that former Youngstown City Councilman [ Herman Hill ?? ] getting money from the general fund to fund his minority business incubator.

BELIEVE IT !!

I guess Tigerlily plays the race card whenever she can't defend her words. Sad sad sad Tigerlily. It's a new world out there thank God and Obama proves it. Not perfect, but new.

Ytownboy: Yes, last I knew from 2 or 3 years ago a former Youngstown city councilman, whom I believe is Herman Hill, started and is running a business incubator for minorities using general fund funds I believe as reported by the vindicator. The biggest problem I have with this is Herman Hill's sealed / unsealed police record which may be expunged as I write this.

White males pay the majority of taxes today and are excluded from this tax funded event? This is a travesty and everyone including white males should be included in this opportunity. Talk about discrimination!!!

William M. Carter hates the white male and has historically proved that fact . The best plans that generate the most jobs should be backed without any bias as to race or gender .

Askmeificare,

Unbelievable, Herman Hill, what a guy.

Tigerlilly,

In a time when the quality of life is declining for all people, don't you think we should all have access to these services? Do you think a white male from an economically disadvantaged background is less deserving? Why do we have these kind of programs based on race and not class?

William M. Carter is a good man who ive taken classes from at YSU. He supports equality and justice for all and he realizes the importance of having minoroties involved in business and industry. This will help all communities and make Youngstown thrive which would make for a better economy.

PS; Why is it certain people up here are only complaining about minorities getting help but not woman? White wopman have gained the most from the Civil Rights movement but it just sounds like some of you are only worried about the white man. The fact is in America the white man has always done well and will always do well. Just the facts

Woolyd,

You are putting all white men in one category. You seem to failt to realize that class and economic status have allot to do with success. Don't white men who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have an equal shot at learning about how to start a business? What justifies restricting these programs based on race and sex?

Yey Ytownboy you have a point. I ve been unable to find oppurtunities at times and I am white. What my main point was that most people complained about minorities getting the oppurtunity and not woman. It seems to me that some people only complain when oppurtunities for minorities are discussed. We need to help all individuals but we also have to understand that racism still exists and it tend to hold monorities back more than whites.
