Reports: Cruze delay done to improve engine performance

Published: Fri, November 13, 2009 @ 12:47 p.m.

Senior General Motors executives pushed back the launch of the Chevrolet Cruze for more time to improve engine performance, reports said.

The Associated Press and The New York Times this week quoted GM officials as saying the shifting and quietness of the car needed to be improved to match industry leaders.

Since the delay that was announced last month, GM has been running the Cruze in 80 mph test runs with the Honda Civic to find ways to match the segment-leading model, The Times reported.

The reports provide more details than GM released when it announced that its Lordstown complex would launch the car in the July to September quarter of 2010, instead of April. Officials last month said the automaker just wanted to be sure the launch would go smoothly.

If they can't beat it why don't they just buy the engines from Honda and put them in the Cruze? It has been done before by many auto companies and the Honda engine plant is 4 hours away.

The union probably has contract language that prevents the usage of Japanese parts. It might cause a union operated engine plant to shutter. It is a good idea Search4Answers as the Japanese engineered engines are far superior.

I'm not so sure that they are "far superior." My Saturn engine just turned 300,000 miles yesterday and shows no signs of wanting to stop now.

Knock on wood Niles, Once in a blue moon, you get lucky! The Japanese engines are more efficient, quieter, and more powerful. (4 cylinder equivalent)

I have my doubts GM engineering is even on par with Ford. Hopefully they don't let their old selves show and screw up badly with the Cruze, the people of the Mahoning Valley need to catch a break for once. I'd argue the Cruze is one of the most important vehicles in GM's lineup as they desperately need a winner in the under 30 crowd where they are turning to other makes while loyal GM brand buyers are aging.

HaydenThomas is right though I have seen Consumer Reports or Car and Driver say that 69% of Japanese cars are built with above average quality. American Cars were ranked almost equally with European cars having about 40% above average quality.

Honda Civic Hybrid...final assembly point is Suzuka,Mie,Japan for the engine and transmission.
...major sources of foreign parts content Japan 40%
...U.S./Canadian Parts Content:55%
total vehicle price $24,945
city mpg 49
highway mpg 51

I would like to see the Cruze offer the solar panel roof to run the AC like the Toyota Prius has.... Toyota is going to have a hard time getting over the floor mat/accelerating you over a cliff issue ...includes the Prius models up to 2009...

Candystripper, the regular 4 cyl and V6 engines for most of Honda's vehicles are made in Ohio.
