Committee looks for altenative city school, classrooms for disruptive students

Published: Mon, November 9, 2009 @ 3:15 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Persistently disruptive students in the city schools could find themselves removed from their classrooms and placed in a more controlled environment where they will learn to improve their behavior.

An ad hoc committee on student discipline and procedures is looking at the creation of an alternative school situation for discipline problems, said Anthony Catale, school board president.

“I have been a proponent of that from the get-go,” he said.

The committee, appointed by Superintendent Wendy Webb, is just starting its work, but Catale, who asked that the committee be created, said the alternative school concept could be one of the group’s recommendations to the school board.

I have long been a proponent of a boarding school for such students. They act that way because there are no consequences for their actions - whether it is due to a disinterested, disabled or absent parent or guardian; lack of regard and respect for education or lack of the basic necessities of life, namely food, clothing and shelter. The Board should work with Judge Dellick to assign these children to such a program and monitor their progress outside of the toxic home environment. I would have loved to serve on such a committee - but I gave up on the city schools long ago.

In large cities many parents have chosen to home school or use charter schools or use Christian and private schools because cities did little to nothing about behavior problems with children whom have not been taught by parents and teachers / administrators have been informed by laws that these children can't be disciplined. When children continue to disrupt classrooms daily other children find it difficult to learn. Step it a right direction to help children learn better behavior at an alternative school.

Does anyone remember the term "reform school?" Maybe it's time to bring them back....not the abusive systems that existed years ago, but somewhere to "contain" these up and coming junior felons! They are what's tearing our school systems apart....eventually our communities!

Another brilliant solution offered by ProAm from The Party of No. But if we kick those trouble makers out of school now atleast we still have him to show them how to operate a broom.

Run the entire school every single day like a prison. Place guards at all doors in the morning and have 2 full time police officers inside the school at all times. Make hallways ONE WAY ONLY to avoid fights. No lockers. Gang clothing or disruptive hair colors automatic suspension. Bathroom breaks only during the last 3 minutes of the class. Assigned seating at lunch that remains the same the entire year and the only way to change that seat assignment is a letter requesting a change from a parent along with a visit to the school from both parent and student. Any student who leaves the school early signs out and will be arrested for loitering if they return to the campus including students who play on team sports. Make it tough for all.
