YOUNGSTOWN — Traffic cameras could be in use by the city as soon as early next year to catch speeders near schools — and possibly in other parts of Youngstown in the near future.
Members of city council support a proposal from Police Chief Jimmy Hughes to make a deal with a company to place cameras near schools.
“We want to utilize them to reduce crime and increase safety,” Hughes said.
The cameras would film vehicles driving by schools — not including Youngstown State University — and monitor the speeds of motorists in school zones, said Councilwoman Annie Gillam, D-1st and chair of the safety committee, and Councilman John R. Swierz, D-7th and a member of the committee.
“It’s basically for safety,” Gillam said. “This is not a money thing. This is a safety thing.”
The cameras could be up and running sometime during the first three months of next year, if everything goes smoothly, Swierz said.
There haven’t been many accidents on and/or near school grounds, but there are problems with speeders in school zones, Gillam, Swierz and Hughes said.
Gillam said she opposes using the cameras in any other location but by schools.
But Swierz and Hughes are interested in expanding the use of the cameras.

What they really mean is
Its for the money why dont they just say it.
Do something useful put cameras all over the south side that go off when a gun is fired
Let's see, they haven't had any issues with kids near schools getting hit and killed but they do have money issues. Yeah, yeah, I believe it's for the safety of the little children and not about the money!
HAHA.
If they do that, then they can really kiss my vote for that sales tax renewal good bye.
I think those cameras are a cop out for, well, the cops. In Youngstown, they really need to be concerned with other things than motorists going a few miles per hour over the speed limit. Let's try going after the drug dealers and the murderers. They'd have better luck if they sporadically put cameras in crack houses across the city.
Once again, there everywhere.....

So that means Youngstown should have them, too?
I typically do the speed limit, especially in school zones, so I'm not really worried about that part of it... but it's a waste of money for a city that doesn't really have much to begin with. Like I said, they need to be more focused on the severe crimes that occur around this city.
did they ever reactivate the camera in girard?
Why not put some cameras up at the crack houses in Youngstown and ticket the customers . Oh the political incorrectness in doing this .
Yes, Youngstown should have them to, and every other city in the country, I had a neighbor child that was killed by a drunken idiot speeding through the school zone. If the cameras make people think twice about speeding through a school zone then so much the better.
Lifes2Short, drunks will continue to speed through school zones - those stupid cameras won't stop a doggone one of them. Why? Because drunk drivers don't think. *IF* they still reside at the address the DMV has for their license plate, they'll get a ticket in the mail, which they'll throw away.
These things are money-grubbers - ONLY! There's no safety involved.
