Riverbend Tavern closed after raid

Published: Thu, November 5, 2009 @ 10:36 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Two men were arrested and charges are pending on multiple others after the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force raided a city business for alleged drug trafficking and gambling offenses.

The task force arrived at the Riverbend Tavern at 1105 Poland Ave., shortly before 6 p.m. today and confiscated drugs and video gambling machines from the business, said Lt. Robin Lees, task force commander.

Tavern operators Larry Meenachan, 58, of Struthers, and John Messer, 59, of Austintown were arrested on gambling offenses, Lees said.

Two other people were arrested on drug offenses and released, and two more have felony drug offense charges pending, Lees said.

He added that the raid followed a six-month investigation that spread out to the suburbs.

Nearly all of the bars on Poland Ave. are a front for one illegal activity or another. Look at that area, its demographics and economics, and ask yourself "how could any bar NOT engaging in illegal activity survive here?"

The "magnifying glass" needs to be used on the bars on South Ave. as well.

Yea I’m sure they all do. That’s the problem in Mahoning County, on piece of scum starts spreading and before you know it, its worse then a wildfire. On the other hand, there are residents who refuse to vote for a levy, EVEN IF IT’S A RENEWAL!!!!!!!!! And wonder why Law Enforcement in this area isn’t doing anything. It’s because they are under staffed and don’t have the money. It’s pretty bad when departments already make you work for six months unpaid when you start, now voters expect the area to clean itself up when every time they check off that box that says NO on a ballot. GARBAGE!!!!!!!

Well perhaps the county should start managing those funds a little bit better. Then I'd be more inclined to vote for it.

It's like giving your kid an allowance for doing chores. Would you still fork over the same amount of allowance if your kid started slacking at their job?
