Pa. jury mulls execution in Ohio students' slaying

Published: Thu, November 5, 2009 @ 12:43 p.m.

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania jury that convicted a former Pittsburgh man accused of fatally shooting two Ohio college students in 1999, must now decide whether the killer deserves the death penalty.

Attorneys for 29-year-old Terrell Yarbrough say he was badly neglected by his heroin-addicted parents and has such a low IQ that his execution should be barred by a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court decision banning the execution of the mentally disabled.

Yarbrough previously was sentenced to death in Ohio for the slayings of Franciscan University students Aaron Land, of Philadelphia, and Brian Muha, of Westerville, Ohio.

He was retried and convicted Tuesday in Washington County, Pa., because the Ohio conviction was overturned because the killings happened in Pennsylvania.
