A longtime incumbent doesn’t understand why he lost; a political newcomer was disappointed.

LIBERTY — Two incumbents and a political newcomer weighed in on why they believe they lost their bids for two trustee seats, while the two challengers who won outlined their priorities.
The vote tallies were Stan Nudell, 1,850; Jason T. Rubin, 1,566; John B. Simon, 1,459; W. Gary Litch, 1,408; and Maureen Massaro, 1,185.
Simon and Litch had trustee seats for 12 and 16 years, respectively.
Simon said he’s still puzzled as to why he lost. “I felt we were doing a good job, and I expected to be re-elected,” he said Wednesday.
He added that the two who were elected, Jason Rubin and Stan Nudell, “are good men.”
His theories on what may have affected the election include light voter turnout and a lack of issues in the race.
“I worked. I went door to door, but it’s one of those things,” he said. He lost by 100 votes. “I’m disappointed, but it’s not the end of the world.”
Litch said he appreciates the chance to serve as trustee for 16 years.
“We had the ability to accomplish a lot of things,” he said. “I wish the new trustees well.”
He said an issue he hopes the new board will focus on is commercial development.
Political newcomer Massaro said she was surprised that both incumbents lost.
She also said she was “very disappointed” at her own outcome. “I worked hard, but it was the first time I ever ran,” she said. “I’m hoping the two challengers who won will make a difference. “
She said she hopes everyone on the new board can work better with township Administrator Pat Ungaro.
She said she doesn’t know if she will run again. “It was a great experience, though.”
Rubin said he believes he won because people of the township wanted change. “I work a lot for the township,” he added.
Nudell also attributed his win to people “wanting new leadership.”
He said campaign organizers and workers helped him get his message to people.
He said commercial development and improving surroundings are important issues in the township. He said bringing back a post office could be explored.
Nudell said he wants to get to know all the township employees and “get a feel for what they’re doing and what can be done to make improvements.”
