Sales tax still losing in Mahoning County

Published: Tue, November 3, 2009 @ 9:04 p.m.

With 25 percent of precincts reporting in Mahoning County (absentee voting and most of Youngstown), the Mahoning County sales tax is still losing with 46.2 percent in favor of it, but renewal tax levies for the library system and Children Services are on their way to strong victories.

The state casino gambling issue is losing slightly in the county, with only 762 votes separating those who vote yes as compared to those in opposition.

There is an extremely tight race for three seats on the Youngstown Board of Education. Less than 400 votes separates the top four candidates. Two challengers, Andrea Mahone and Rachel I. Hanni, are the top two vote getters, longtime board member Lock Beachum Sr. is in third place. The two other incumbents seeking re-election — Dominic Modarelli and Jackie Taylor — are in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
