Mayor Williams believes Youngstown is preferred V&M Star expansion site

Published: Mon, November 2, 2009 @ 1:00 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams said his meeting today in Paris with four top officials of V&M Star Steel’s parent company left him believing this area is their preferred location for a $970 million expansion project.

“I am comfortable this site is as competitive as any other,” Williams said Monday shortly a one-hour meeting with Vallourec Group officials. “I interpreted [the conversation as] our site is the preferred site. Those are my words and not theirs.”

The officials are “very pleased” with efforts in the Valley to bring the potential plant here, Williams said.

“It went very well,” Williams said of the meeting. “I’m very comfortable that they understand our desire to have this ultimately land in the Mahoning Valley.”

Vallourec officials are expected to make a decision on the location by December or January.

“They indicated the incentives we bring to the table make our site attractive and competitive,” Williams said.

Off to Paris on WHO'S DIME, Mayor Williams? Who did he drag along with him on the city's money? A 50 dollar webcam and internet access could have been sufficient for this situation...Just ask Obama after his Olympics fiasco. If and when this idea fails Jay should be made to pay back every dime. This has got to be them most expensive one hour meeting he's ever taken. Youngstown residents should be OUTRAGED.

One trip to Europe isn't nearly as bad as Akron's mayor, Don Plusquellic. Plusquellic travels the globe on the taxpayers dime.

Stay in Boardman and don't worry about Youngstown. The mayor was in Germany as the guest/speaker at a conference and sidelined it to Paris. If we get this project, are you going to complain then?

What in Gods name does speaking at a conference in Germany have to do with Youngstown's problems? Mr peanut is mayor of a VERY BROKE CITY and is globetrotting?? The reason his city is so broke is because of decisions like this!!! The cost of this overseas trip could have been bypassed by showing up via satellite or via the internet. If you don't agree then yer nuts.

From this Saturday article:
http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/oct/31/wi...

"Williams arrived in Germany on Oct. 23 to attend the German Marshall Fund’s “Comparative Domestic Policy Program.” Williams was among 13 officials from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and North Carolina attending the conference. His expenses were paid by the fund."

Read the last sentence carefully, boardmanneedschange.

boardmanneeds change wouldn't recognize change if it bit him in the butt. he/she is simply caught up in the jump-on-whatever-moves mentality that some in this region have toward anything good.

i'm proud of my mayor for being not just a leader in the city and region, but on the national level and now on the international stage. we live in what they now call the "global" marketplace. with a mayor speaking in other parts of the globe, he has potential to interest others in bringing work and other sorts of projects here.

boardmanneedschange needs to change.

V&M established a late August deadline for the land deal between Girard and Youngstown. Yet they refuse to identify the location of their projected expansion until December or January. So, why did they need to line up their local ducks so soon? Things are not adding up. Something is rotten in the state of Paris (and Youngstown, Girard, etc). Jay's presence in Paris just added to the rot. But it could have been worse had Melfi joined him.

Whatever you say, gang. The trip to Germany was free. Not the extra sidetrip to Paris. Jay Williams is nuts, and all you guys are going to get taken for a ride on the loony train. I've made my plan to get the hell away from Yompton and live a life where I don't have to worry about crack fiend dope dealers that run the streets after dark. Heres hoping I dont get robbed at gunpoint on my way out of town. Not everyone in Youngstown is a criminal, but man are the numbers sure going up. I just calls it like I sees it and I see a town that scares the heck out of business. Like I said, I hope V & m does set up shop, but that aint gonna save Youngstown. Youngstown hasn't been wise with money in the past, and just because you got a little cash doesnt mean you can clean up well. Good luck Youngstown, you need it.

Right, boardmanneedschange, you keep telling yourself that. Goodbye! We won't miss you!

And the deal with V&M isn't just for Youngstown, ahole. It's for the entire region, including your precious Boardman. Which hasn't been wise with money in the recent past themselves!

The numbers in crime are going down in Youngstown, for your information.

And there are just as many drug dealers in Boardman. I see them listed in the Vindicator every weekend. Oh, and how about that wonderfully filthy house in Canfield?

Your ideas are perceived realities, not reality.

Good luck moving.
