Jurors say spare Curtis Young’s life; but no parole

Published: Tue, May 19, 2009 @ 4:45 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The life of Curtis Young has been spared.

The jurors who convicted Young of a triple murder recommended this afternoon that he serve life in prison without parole.

Young, 26, of North Center Street, was convicted May 8 in the July 31, 2007, shooting deaths of Helen Moore, 29, of Cassius Street, who was his ex-girlfriend; her nearly full-term fetus; and her 8-year-old son, Ceonei.

In that verdict, the nine-woman, three-man jury found him guilty as charged of all aggravated murder counts and all firearm and death penalty specifications.

In their deliberations concerning today’s penalty verdict, the jurors had four choices: 25 years to life in prison, 30 to life, life without parole; and the death penalty.

Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will decide Young’s sentence, but she cannot impose the death penalty now that the jury has recommended one of the life sentence options. Sentencing is set for 9 a.m. Friday.

Why jurors? Why?

Why can someone take 2, potentially 3, lives and then live for god knows how many years in a prison system that is not working?

At the same time, I certainly hope the judge will give him no opportunity for parole. I don't want people, who have so little regard for life as this, out on the streets.

That's moronic.

Just put him to death. One less out there. I mean, it's not like he's any use in prison for the rest of his life anyhow. Make room for the next criminal.

Couldn't think of a better use for tax dollars these days?

It's either we spend the tax dollars on letting this man stay in prison and live better than we probably do, or we spend it on his death.

Either way, tax payers get screwed.

When's the day going to come that they just say forget all of this expensive death penalty BS and just put a bullet in these criminals' heads. A bullet is much cheaper. I'd gladly go out and buy a few rounds for the county to use rather than spend my hard earned money so some piece of garbage can continue his pathetic excuse of a life by sitting in a cell until he is given the luxury of dying from natural causes years from now (unlike his vicitims, whose lives were cut terribly short).

maybe he did deserve death in the minds of some people but you have to take all of the evidence into account and the most important part is that all 12 jurors have to agree that the death pentalty is the right penalty. there were quite a few factors that the jurty had to consider, it's not an easy choice. And believe me, there were a lot of factors It is easy to be an armchair or monday morning quarterback but actually being in the room and in the game, is difficult.

hmmm Juror4 (wink wink)? Are you one of the jurors in this case. Is it that the death penalty is not fitting or that not all jurors believe in the death penalty as a matter of policy?

thanks to the jury now this punk is going to become a jail house attorney and hes going to study the law to find a flaw in his case and then he,ll be let out of prison. this punk should of got a bullet in the head today. but beings he got life without parole. he should have to look at pictures everyday of the two lives he took and also look at the ultrasound of the baby. he should have to see these pictures everyday at breakfast, lunch, dinner and at anytime before lock down and and at bed time. and not only the pictures of these people being alive but a picture of their dead bodies.

It cost us more to put the man to death with all of the automatic appeals and other appeals they come up with and just destroys the families of the victims.

Some other inmate will take care of this murderer in jail. ...
