A partisan smokescreen

EDITOR:

Did President Obama not put his best foot forward trying to present a strong case for bipartisanship among Republicans in the House and Senate? Did he not invite key party officials to attend a Super Bowl party at the White House to continue to build and mend bridges at an event loved and enjoyed by all and without politics? Yet, after this, still a slap in the face. Last week, Congress and the Senate voted on Obama’s budget request, the reaction was the same for both houses, not a single Republican voted in support of the budget plan. And the Republicans say they want be bipartisan, they want to work together for the benefit of the people.

It was pretty apparent who they were working for the last eight years, surely not the common folk. If my memory serves me correctly, they voted against the Obama stimulus package in block form as well. Each time that they do this, it does little for their support at home and gives even bigger gains for the Democratic Party. They will continue to lose support because of their holier-than-thou, condescending and better-than-you attitude. The American people have become very tired of this conduct; this is why Barack Obama and many others like him were able to win office.

The Republican Party is starting to unravel at the seams. Arlene Specter has defected; who is next? Maybe Orrin Hatch, their most trusted and loyal conservative. I believe they are in for a long and painful demise. And now that the Democrats are moving closer to the magical number of 60 votes, then I say let the opponents eat cake. The Democrats won’t need to beg, borrow or steal or even negotiate in order to reach an approval. All they need to do is pass the bill and Obama will sign it. What could be easier? We should thank the Republican party for making our lives so pleasant.

The republican party did this to themselves and are in need of reinvention. They have thrived for the past 20-30 years under the yoke of evangelical Christians. That strategy has recently begun to fail them at the polls.

I'm not condemning either side, I'm merely curious what would happen to the religious right should the republicans sink further from power. Where would they go? Would we have a new major political party based on theology?

We will see what happens next year with the congressional elections. This majority vote may only last that long. Even so, all in the congress and senate, aren't backing these bills a 100%.

Lance,

Pass along whatever you are taking. Orrin Hatch becoming a Democrat? Try Olympia Snow, or Susan Collins. They along with Spector, voted for the Porkulus Bill.

Republicans voted against the Stimulus because it is a bad idea, that won't work. Conservatives offered solutions for real economic growth, but were shouted down as the party of NO. So in turn, most of the Congressional Republicans did not want to be attached to bad policy.

Obama in 100 days managed to add more to the national debt then Bush did in 8 years. And all he is going to do by his own admission is save 3 million jobs. He could have given every man, woman, and child a millions dollars flat out and he would have spent less.

"Conservatives offered solutions for real economic growth". What were they? What are they today? The Republican plan while Fredo was President was yes to anything he wanted whether it involved the economy our anything else. The Republican plan since Obama became President has been no to anything he is trying to do to cure the Bush economy they helped create.

As far as the Republicans gaining seats in 2010 elections, that's a dream. Personally I can't wait for 2012 and the Republican primaries and debates. Republicans eat their own. Imagine those debates. Mitt the twit, Sarah McScary, Rudy 9/11, Huckleberry, Ron Paul. I'm going to buy the box set when it comes out on DVD.

How about cutting the capital gains tax. Get private investment going. And guess what, when Clinton dropped it from 25% to 20%, it brought in more tax revenue. And when Bush dropped it to 15%, again the revenue form it increased.

This would drive investment and create REAL jobs.

Not the smoke and mirror jobs that Obama is talking about. I mean when the stimulus money is gone, and there are no more roads or bridges to build. What happens to all those supposed jobs then? MASS LAYOFFS!

Get the Government out of the Auto industry. Let the car companies build cars that people will buy. Get rid of the cafe standards. Detroit is getting ready to do away with American Legends. Can anyone say bye-bye Corvette. Let the consumer dictate what.

This country is headed down the wrong path with regards to government spending. It has been bad for a long time (since Reagan). Bush II made it worse and now Obama has our descendents really reeling. We need change that I fear neither party has the will for.

"We should thank the Republican party for making our lives so pleasant."... Are our lives so pleasant?

I think irishfan91 is onto something... "We need change that I fear neither party has the will for." Our traditional 2-party system is what has failed. We seem to think that politicians will make thing better for us. They won't and they can't. They are politicians!

I wouldn't mind paying the higher taxes if I actually got my money's worth. All you have to do is look at our local government and you will see the real failure that exists - even more at the federal level.
