Judge jails 2 men pending child-rape trials

Published: Wed, March 4, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m.

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Two suspects facing potential life prison terms if they’re convicted of charges that they raped children are jailed without bond.

At a Tuesday arraignment session, Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered the defendants, Edson D. Halk and Jeremiah Landis, to be placed in the county jail until further notice.

Judge Krichbaum had issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Halk, 42, of Platten Avenue, Cleveland, after he failed to show up for a Feb. 18 arraignment.

Halk, who was arrested last Wednesday, was indicted by the county grand jury Jan. 29 on three counts of rape. He’s accused of raping a girl between the ages of 7 and 10 between Jan. 1, 2006, and Sept. 22, 2008.

Halk’s case, which was investigated by Springfield Township police, is assigned to the judge for further proceedings. It has been set for trial March 16.

Landis, 27, of North Cross Street, Columbiana, was indicted by the county grand jury Thursday on eight counts of raping a child under age 10. Authorities arrested him Saturday.

His case is set for trial May 18 before Judge James C. Evans.

That's BS... The system doesn't work... You gotta remember when they say they get get 12 or 10 years it's really only HALF that if your good. Good Behavior cuts any sentence in half maybe even shorter. But the real person being rapped in the broken system is the tax payer. He's just going to Disney Land to his 5 years and guess what? He'll be out to do it again because they just get a lot of time to think of new ways to do something with out getting caught. That's the REAL sad reality of it all.

Want real Change? Public shootings and Hangings... That IS what they deserve. Set an Example that these type of actions are not tolerated by ANYONE... Period! Then take the Rope or the Shell casing and give it to the family -- But they will be required to pay for the rope or the bullet -- Tax ya know.

I agree with you EricLW! Only I think we need to get the good old militia going - just to help out the local police of course.....

Those little girls will NEVER forget what's been done to them and even if they go through years of counseling, it comes back to haunt you later in life.

Public shooting is too quick - Hanging in downtown Y-town at high noon.... hey, that might just be what gets our town back on the map. We can charge other states to hang their worst criminals for them!
