COLUMBUS (AP) — The state is about to enter its first temporary budget in almost two decades as lawmakers struggle to balance Ohio’s $54 billion budget.
House lawmakers were prepared to approve a seven-day spending plan today that will allow the state to keep operating while budget talks continue.
The deadline for a balanced budget is Wednesday, but lawmakers realized they couldn’t get the deal worked out by then.
At issue is a fight over raising $933 million with lottery-run video slot machines at Ohio’s seven horse race tracks.
Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, wants Senate Republicans to support the plan as a way to fill Ohio’s $3.2 billion deficit.
Senate President Bill Harris says Strickland has the authority to authorize the game without legislative help.
Comments
The shortfall is $8.7 billion , not $3.2 billion. Ohio received a $5.5 billion one time bailout in the federal Stimulus Package.
Ohio's income is down, very specifically under the Strickland administration as manufacturing jobs flee Ohio. Besides the autoo industry folding under the weight of oppressive governmental regualtions, Governor Strickland allowed National Cash Register (NCR) to relocate to Georgia without entering the fight. It appears his economic development guru is too busy running for the US Senate.
Ohio government is long overdue for a reduce diet on spending. Ohio is the thrid highest taxed state in the union. Spend less, tax less, become more desireable for employers to locate here. It is Economics 102.
Wow, what an about face from his original stance on gambling during his campaign for governor! This is the only way he knows how to balence our budget? Ted hasn't come through with much from his original campaign promises! So now he's changing his stance on his promises out of desperation!
I know Taft had his faults, but at least the state didn't fall into the red under his watch! Trust me when I tell you there's alot of wasted spending all throughout the state government! If more fiscally responsible spending occurred within every government agency, I'm sure you could save millions! Instead, Ted ignores the irresponsible spending of his government agencies. He also wastes our tax payer dollars by paying off those two bimbo's from Dann's office just to make the whole thing go away!
I think its time for a change....this administration has been quite ineffective!
