There’s a reason attendance was down at Borts pool

EDITOR:

I was very disappointed by the news concerning the choice not to reopen Borts pool for the summer. In the past my family and I enjoyed spending part of the day there catching some rays and relaxing on a beautiful summer’s day. Last year, the environment and climate there changed, which kept many patrons away. The lack of patrons was cited as the main reason for the decision.

We did not go to the pool much last year because of the arrival of the “gangstas”, “playas” and the drama queen from other sides of town, They came there for one purpose and one purpose only — conflict. For example, one day last summer my wife could sense something was building up as more and more undesirables congregated at the pool site. Fortunately, I heeded my wife’s warning and left before the trouble started. We heard that later on that day a “rumble” had occurred where a stabbing of a young lady took place.

After that incident, we decided it was not worth putting our lives on the line just to have pool privileges. Although the police were visible as security, it did not prevent conflict. I overheard comments on several occasions made by the “undesirables” that “popo” or not, they would not be denied. With that kind of attitude and talk, it’s no wonder the patrons stopped supporting the Borts pool experience.

Mr. Pappas, you are exactly correct. Nobody will admit the truth of course. Thanks for your honesty. I see it every day, right in the same area, most of the good people live in a constant nervous state thanks to the same folks that ruined your summer tradition.

This is why many people move to another community as well. Fear for our safety motivates people.

All of us want to live in a safe neighborhood and not be in fear of danger to our family and friends.

Time and again, it is being proven that our government leaders and safety services departments cannot provide the safety we feel we deserve, because they cannot control the growth of crime.

Block watches, gated communities, private security, security cameras, vicious dogs, and armed homeowners. Why are we in this state of affairs?

We are living in an era and time in our lives when we fear walking down the street. When we visit a carry-out store gas station, we scan the store and look over our shoulder as we pay the cashier. We never, ever think about walking up to an ATM machine to take out money. We never, ever let our children out of our sight in public. When a stranger walks up to us, or begins to talk to us, we immediately become suspicious and defensive.

Is this the way we want to live? Why are we allowing it to continue? Or, do we just keep moving?

You should not have to put your life on the line to go to the city pool for some sun and fun. Youngstown is in such a sad state because of THEM.

ProAm, there are only two city pools - Borts and Northside. So it's reasonable for people "outside of the neighborhood" to want to go to one or the other.

Also, "segregation" has a very unpleasant historic meaning that might be misconstrued in this context.

Northsideperson, I see what you mean....and unfortunately I think the word "undesireables" is being used here as a PC replacement word for blacks, especially given the use of other black "culture words". Mr Pappas, you might have some strong feelings, but your letter sounds extremely hateful and prejudiced. Honestly I am surprised the Vindicator printed this....

Sadly but most of the posts are simply the truth.
