Ex-NFL QB Bernie Kosar files for bankruptcy

Published: Fri, June 19, 2009 @ 3:35 p.m.

MIAMI (AP) — Former NFL and Miami Hurricanes star quarterback Bernie Kosar has filed for bankruptcy protection in Miami.

Kosar’s Chapter 11 filing today lists assets between $1 million and $10 million and liabilities of between $10 million and $50 million.

Kosar, a Boardman native, owes almost $1.5 million to the Cleveland Browns, the team he quarterbacked from 1985 to 1993.

Kosar also owes his ex-wife Babette $3 million and $725,000 to the owner of the Cleveland Gladiators team in the Arena Football League. He owes a bank more than $9 million for bad real estate deals.

The 45-year-old Kosar got divorced in 2007 and last year saw his steakhouse go out of business.

In addition to the Browns, Kosar played for Dallas and Miami before retiring from the NFL in 1996. Kosar began his football career at Boardman High School.

This is truly sad news. You should have given your financial advisors an IQ test Bernie. When you seen them driving the round peg in a square hole you would have known something was amiss!

ouch, you people on here are vicious. I was no Kosar (or Browns) fan for that matter but you guys are like vultures. obviously no one plans on things like divorce, a bad economy or having to file bankruptcy so why do you feel the need to judge?

god forbid any of you ever go through a downturn of some sort... too bad guys like Stan will never become success stories because if they did and their lives suddenly hits the bricks, we could all publicly rub it in. cause yeah, that sounds like fun...

get a life

"so why do you feel the need to judge?"

Bernie had plenty of money but too many vultures along for the ride. I've been through many bumps down the road of life. In the long run life has been good.
