Ohio’s Black Caucus rips Senate Republicans for cutting funding that benefits minority communities

Published: Wed, June 10, 2009 @ 6:10 p.m.

COLUMBUS — Members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus chastised Senate Republicans today for removing provisions from the state budget that benefit minority communities.

“To us, it’s amazing and sad that in 2009 we are standing here, fighting for the rights of African Americans in this state,” said Rep. Sandra Williams, a Democrat from the Cleveland area and caucus president. “We are always first in every budget cycle to be cut when it comes to the resources we need to survive.”

She added, “It is a shame that African-American businesses have to have special laws on the books to get the state of Ohio to do business with them. It is a shame that African-American children have to have special programs in order to seek the resources they need to compete with other people in this state.”

The Ohio Senate last week passed its version of the state budget, slashing about $1 billion in spending, plus a number of earmarks for specific projects.

But members of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus today said the Republican-led cuts disproportionately affect minority communities — one example was a program aimed at preventing at-risk black students from dropping out of school.

I'm guessing if it was changed from "preventing at-risk black students from dropping out of school" to "preventing at-risk students from dropping out of school" that would not be acceptable

What does the "OHIO LEGISLATIVE WHITE CAUCUS" think? Oh yeah, we can't have a WHITE caucus - that would be racist and discriminatory.

** Its not about color, get a clue we are in dire straights economically. To prove this the Veterans Administration has had their budget cut by the FED. I'm a white disabled vet. Should I think that this is reverse discrimination against me. No its life right now. The US has NO money ask China for it. Give me a break Black Caucus and quite crying racism all of the time. It is getting friggin old!!! We elected a Black President. Cry to him.

It is "a shame that African-American businesses have to have special laws on the books to get the state of Ohio to do business with them. It is a shame that African-American children have to have special programs in order to seek the resources". You know why its a shame? Because they aren't any laws for the white people or the asian people or the latino people. Everything is handed to the blacks or african americans or colored people or whatever is politically correct this hour and all they do is constantly complain. If everything is so hard for them here then move to another country or back to Africa considering african american would lead me to believe that all people going by that term lived in Africa at some point in their lives. I have been here all my life and I go by American not german american or irish american or canadian american or antarctic american. Quit crying and get over it!

"Fighting for the rights of African Americans". So I guess it is a "right" for African Americans to be handed state tax dollars. I am always amazed but never surprised. Because they can't be self sufficient on their own - right?

I wonder what would happen if state monies were distributed to certain areas based soley on the revenue the state collected from that area. For example, you can only receive an amount in relation to what tax revenue the state receives from your area.
I bet people would start flipping those burgers in a hurry.

The day of special treatment for blacks needs to be over. Let them compete as Americans with no special favoritism. Barack Obama has done alright for himself hasn't he? Why can't the rest of the black population do the same for themselves? Get an education and off welfare then you can compete in America.

it goes ON AND ON AND ON....Give me a break!

“We are always first in every budget cycle to be cut when it comes to the resources we need to survive.”

Resources needed to survive?
a program aimed at preventing at-risk black students from dropping out of school.

That is a resource to SURVIVE? Wasting money on trying to keep a black student from dropping out of school when he doesn't want to be there in the first place. Am I missing something here? We have homeless people, vets, prisons, THE ECONOMY all in a depression and there worried about cutting a fund cut from keeping a black student from dropping out of school and Lord no's what else funds for blacks. UNREAL!
