Boardman man tells Youngstown police Pavlik hit him

Published: Mon, July 27, 2009 @ 7:55 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — A 45-year-old Boardman man says boxing champion Kelly Pavlik and Pavlik’s trainer assaulted him at a South Avenue bar.

Ronald Cappitte told police that he went into the East Side Civics about 11 p.m. Saturday, walked up to Pavlik, 28, to say “hi” and Pavlik punched him in the groin.

Cappitte reported the allegation to police Monday morning.

“It’s a flat-out lie,” said Jack Loew, Pavlik’s trainer. “I was there with my wife, my son, my future daughter-in-law. We were standing there talking.”

No charges have been filed.

Editor's note: This story was corrected on July 28, 2009 with the correct name of the Boardman man who reported the allegation to police.

Perhaps Kelly and Jack would do well to stay out of bars for the duration of Kellys reign. It does not look good for either of them to have so many alcohol related stories and rumors constantly in the news around Youngstown. If he were my fighter, I'd be sure he did his drinking in private and at home.

i doubt either side is telling the truth. i'm guessing the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

the guy probably felt the need to bug him when he was trying to enjoy a night out. and kelly didn't give him the autograph or picture he wanted so cappitte probably instigated something and kelly finished it.

i wouldn't be surprised if he did punch him, but if he did, cappitte probably did/said something to deserve it.

well the pic u have up stan is not the right guy they have the wrong name up there. There is always way more to the story then what they put. The guy this happened too isnt one of those type of people to start something especially with kelly. They know each other very well infact, but it doesnt matter anyway because kelly and jack are going to do whatver they can to make themselves look like the victim nothing new there.

In Pavlik's defense, he was probably drunk (again), so he didn't know what he was doing. But that's ok, Kelly. Drink all you want. Youngstown loves ya!

Kelly has lots of issues. I do believe he hit the man. It's so sad to see the Y-town hero going down in flames.

I guess the Civics gave him a better purse than HBO &/or Showtime. So much for holding out for more money...I guess the network needed to throw in a few PBR's to make it worth Kelly's while. Good luck to all..

Wow, when Kelly is doing great-everyone is behind him, when he is having a difficult time-everyone throws him off the bridge. Whether he did it or not, that is not way to treat a man that is a hero to local kids.

I say - if you weren't there to witness it, don't be so quick to judge. No one knows what really happened except the people who were there. And why shouldn't Kelly and his friends be able to go out to a bar when they feel like it. He doesn't forget where he's from and he hangs out at the places that support him. There is nothing wrong with that.

That picture Stan posted IS NOT the person in the article... The name is correct, this however, is not the person they are referring to in the article.
