Published: Wed, July 22, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m.

staff report

WARREN — The last Sutliff Museum one-day bus tour for this year will be to Underground Railroad sites in Ashtabula County on Aug. 5. The trip will feature the Hubbard House Museum in Ashtabula Harbor and the restored village in Jefferson.

There are three distinct features of the Hubbard House: the 1841 home of William and Catharine Hubbard on the first floor, the Underground Railroad exhibit area on the second floor and the Civil War and Americana exhibit area in the basement. Docents will illuminate the history of the house and the Hubbards’ activity in the Underground Railroad.

After the tour, the group will travel to Jefferson for lunch at the historic Congregational Church where John Brown preached. After a short lecture describing the life and work of the famous abolitionist, the group will have a tour of the historic village that has been assembled across the street. It features a restored train depot, an early general store, a one-room schoolhouse and a church. There also will be a short visit to Joshua Gidding’s law office where Judge Milton Sutliff, a member of the family for whom the Sutliff Museum is a memorial, also practiced law during Abraham Lincoln’s time.

The bus will leave from the Wal-Mart parking lot on Elm Road at 9 a.m. The cost is $42 per person, which includes transportation, admission, lunch, snacks and bottled water on the bus.

To reserve a seat, send a check or money order to Sutliff Bus Tours, 4053 Sunnybrook Drive S.E., Warren, OH 44484 by July 29. Indicate Hubbard House on the check memo. For more information, call the museum at (330) 399-8807, ext. 121, or go to sutliffmuseum.org, where a reservation form may be downloaded.
