Bank files foreclosure against developer of Firestone Farms

Published: Wed, July 22, 2009 @ 5:15 p.m.

COLUMBIANA — Foreclosure action filed against the housing developer at Firestone Farms will not affect home or condo owners or other businesses in the development.

National City Bank, recently purchased by the Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank, filed foreclosure action recently in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court against Meadowbrooke Development run by Wayne Bacon.

Rick Vernal, part-owner of The Links at Firestone Farms, the golf course in the development, said Wednesday the bank filed a foreclosure complaint only against Bacon’s company.

Vernal of Beaver Township, Pa., said the golf course and the banquet center on Firestone Farms property are unaffected by the foreclosure, even though Bacon also is a partner in the golf course and banquet center.

It was an ideal bedroom community (or so it was thought) for wealthy Pittsburghers seeking to avoid high housing costs in Western PA. That was before the price of gas went up.

Re: Foxtrot's comment
Maybe the point of living at the Links is that it is not too close to any "developed" areas. I don't know about you but I don't want Walmart as my neighbor.

I just did some checking on Google maps also. It's around 3 miles from the center of Poland and the center of Boardman to the nearest Youngstown city limit. Canfield is a bit further away at around 4-1/2 miles. If that's what's meant by being close to the most basic of commodities, I'll take Columbiana anyday. As the creeping crud of Youngstown continues to venture beyond the city limits, those 3 place are in the line of fire. Thanks for defending the border....

Foxtrot, your facts need a little work. The Firestone Farms subdivision isn't some farmer's field being parceled into lots. This is a mature development that has over 50 occupied homes and condos and an 18 hole golf course. I'm afraid your estimate of 15k for the lots is not accurate. Many of these dwellings are around 2500 s.f. and some are over 3500 s.f. The school system is rated "excellent" and the cost of commuting you're so worried about is offset by lower home and auto insurance rates as well as low utility costs from the city of Columbiana.

You did have one correct item in your post. Columbiana is closer to Pittsburgh than most other valley areas. Since the theater, arts, sports, real shopping, museums and true fine dining are mostly nowhere to be found in the valley, it's nice to be close to a "real" metro area like Pittsburgh. The only thing metro about the Mahoning valley is the crime rate. You should consider leaving your house once in a while.

Isn't is amazing how whenever a story like this comes out, there are always haters who have nothing but negative things to say? Why are people like this in this area? Whether it's GM, Delphi, etc, everyone is always happy to see others fail. The Columbiana area is a great area and I moved out here so I wasn't 100 feet away from Best Buy and the shops at the park or the Southern park Mall. Oh boy, I'm 10 miles away from the cesspool known as Wal Mart. I should probably hang myself. Have you ever set foot in the Boardman WalMart? Who wants to live close to that place. The traffic out here is very minimal and it is a straight shot to Pittsburgh where a lot of people in this area have good Federal jobs and make the commute. The homes here are beautiful and the property taxes are a fraction of what they are in Poland, Boardman and Canfield so the 1% income tax still makes it cheaper to live out here. Plus, living on a golf course is pretty nice. Where else in this area can you say that? Nobody ever mentions that from day one when the Westford community in Canfield opened, that the Kennsington golf course ran out of money and to this day, still have not finished that golf course. I guess Canfield is immune to negative comments.

I'm not sure why the focus is on the proximity to Pittsburgh. I doubt it's the #1 reason folks live at the Links. I agree that the lots may be over priced, but that's not the sole issue. The plans for the development were also very aggressive and maybe not so realistic. Plus, the economy and housing market tanked when the Links was trying to get off the ground. No matter the issue, the Links is a beautiful development on a great golf course. Hopefully it won't be affected by the foreclosure.

Wow Foxtrot. You should consider politics. You have a great knack for picking out only the parts of my post that would seem to support your position. You have some serious anger towards Columbiana. Let me guess. Jealousy, envy? You must live in one of the many perfect communitites in our area. Perhaps Chippewa? I hear it's just as nice as Columbiana...The sunset over the Walmart is lovely this time of year.

Glad to see that others agree on the Boardman Wal-mart. It really is a terrible place. I don't frequent Wal-Mart but if I have to go, I definitely avoid that particular one. You can see some very interesting characters there. It is much cheaper than paying $8.75 to go to the movies.
