Contests are fair play for cooks

Entrants in competitions at the Canfield Fair can show of their culinary talents and win money.

The Canfield Fair is right around the corner, and local chefs and food aficionados have an opportunity to showcase their talents and tasty culinary creations in two different fair cooking competitions.

Both contests — the Make it with Malt-O-Meal Recipe Contest and the Hidden Valley Farms Fresh Taste for the Family Contest — will be judged Sept. 3 in the Arts and Crafts Building. Judging is open to the public.

Kathy Bennett, Canfield Fair director in charge of arts and crafts, said the contests are a fun and festive chance for local cooks to show off their baking and cooking skills and to be rewarded for their efforts.

About the contests

Entrants for both contests will have an opportunity to win money, and the first place winner of the Fresh Taste of the Family Contest will be entered into the grand prize contest, competing with the winners from 46 state and local fairs participating nationwide for the $2,000 cash grand prize. All prize money is generated from the sponsoring companies.

The Malt-O-Meal contest, sponsored by Malt-O-Meal, is a nationwide contest that will be held at 25 state and local fairs nationally. This year’s fair marks the second consecutive year at the Canfield Fair, and last year’s winner was Dorothy Guzman of North Jackson for her blueberry streusel cake, Bennett said.

This year’s entries will be judged on taste, creativity and recipe convenience, and first and second place winners will receive a $100 cash and $50 cash awards, respectively. The third place winner will receive $25 worth of Malt-O-Meal coupons.

The Fresh Taste of the Family Contest, sponsored by Hidden Valley, marks the sixth consecutive appearance at the Canfield Fair and focuses on recipes using fresh ingredients.

The contest will be featured at 46 state and local fairs nationwide. Entrants for this year’s competition must use Hidden Valley The Original Ranch Salad Dressing and Seasoning Mix in their recipes.

Bennett said last year’s Canfield Fair winner was Helen Shevel of Canfield for her fresh stromboli roll recipe.

Local winners will receive $200 for first place and $100 and $50, respectively, for second and third place.

Bennett said contest entry books are being mailed to all 2008 contest entrants, and new entrants are encouraged to contact the fair office at (330) 533-4107 for more information.
