YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University has fired the president of its Association of Classified Employees union.
Ivan Maldonado, 41, of Boardman, was notified of his termination earlier this week, according to a YSU spokesman.
Maldonado, an employee of the YSU payroll department, had been placed on administrative leave with pay since March 13 after another ACE union employee filed a criminal complaint against him accusing him of making what she felt was a threatening telephone call to her on March 10.
Maldonado was later charged with one misdemeanor count of menacing in Youngstown municipal court and faced an Aug. 5 trial date.
The university’s action against him prompted the ACE union to file an unfair labor practice charge with the State Employment Relations Board, charging that the action against Maldonado and the union are part of an ongoing and concerted effort to discredit and neutralize the union leadership.
ACE is a union for nonteaching employees.

This is just another union busting tactic in my opinion. I will follow this story to the finish.
I would sure like his job if it becomes available. Most people would be grateful to work at YSU and wouldn't look for ways to be disruptive, especially for those of us who have lost our jobs due to downsizing.
Unions are an unnecessary evil. Most employees don't want union "representation", of course the Mahoning Valley is an unique case of 1930's socialism and most if it's residents have never matured beyond FDR. Grow up Mahoning Valley.
"Most employees don't want union representation"...until you get targeted and fired like Mr. Maldonado.
Grow up Mahoning Valley! Take your pay and benefit cuts lying down and watch your jobs continue to evaporate in the name of profit.
Self employment is still available in The Valley picking up aluminum cans alongside the road . Ten out of ten can harvesters have no need or desire for a union .
It just seems fishy that he is getting fired over 1 phone call, there has to be more to this story.
This is one ACE Union member from YSU that does not support Ivan Maldonado. And, DragonFly664, this guy has been controversial since before he became President of our Union. He gets over a 50% raise out of our last contract, hasn't paid into retirement (state) yet gets credit for it; uses tuition remission for his nephew (not allowed - only those children you claim on your income tax); oh what else, oh yes......he didn't intimidate just one person who is taking him to trial, but many others in the Union. Can you believe that while everything is in appeal, he has the "ego" to still run for Union President for 3 more years AND there are still people that support him! I am thrilled to work at YSU; these people that support him don't know how good we have it. I'll be a fair share employee and leave the Union if this guy gets re-elected.

But is this a viable living wage? Can a person in this employ afford a modest house, minimal utilities and adequate food?
I suspect not, having talked to friends who recycle cans for a non-profit organization. Do you have a better suggestion, or better data?

Why not run yourself then?
