‘Fallen Officers Memorial Run’ to draw 1,000-plus motorcycles
YOUNGSTOWN — Upward of 1,000 motorcycles are expected to participate in the seventh annual “Fallen Officers Memorial Run” in memory of Michael Hartzell on Sunday.
The event is presented by the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Ohio Chapter XXVII and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28.
Registration for the fully escorted run, the proceeds from which are donated to charities and scholarship funds, is from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Covelli Center, 229 E. Front St. Participants can also get the registration form by going to the event Web site, www.bkoh27.com.The costs are: $15 for riders and $10 for passengers, with each receiving a $5 food voucher to use at any of a dozen area bars and restaurants.
The opening ceremony will be at 11:10 a.m. with the first bike out at 11:30. The run will end in the downtown area at the square about 1 p.m. Upon return, free parking for all bikes will be at the Square in the area of Market Street between Boardman and Commerce Streets. This area will be blocked off to all traffic to provide safe and suitable parking for bikes.
There will be parking, food, drinks and entertainment in the downtown area, and a dozen area restaurants and bars will be open to redeem meal tickets that expire at 5 p.m. the day of the event.
The Blue Knights/FOP area will be located adjacent to Central Plaza near the large outdoor stage, where run pins, shirts, bears and other items from the run will be for sale. A beer truck will be located near Central Plaza. Entertainment will be three bands starting at 1:30 p.m., Still Smokin’, River Saints and A Little Left of Center, said Bob Conway, Blue Knights treasurer.
