Survivors network plans Thursday meeting on clergy misconduct

Published: Mon, July 6, 2009 @ 6:35 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — SNAP, a Chicago-based national support group for clergy sex abuse victims, claims Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown “is ignoring” its request for a public meeting on sexual misconduct by the clergy, and specifically the case of the Rev. Thomas Crum.

Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests plans a public meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Boardman branch of Youngstown-Mahoning County Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave.

“I have made myself available to speak to individuals in the diocese about this matter. We are not accountable to an outside group,” Bishop Murry said. “They have every right to hold a meeting.”

He also noted attorneys for the diocese took the proper steps by alerting law enforcement to the allegations against Father Crum, and the police continue to investigate.

In an e-mail, the group said it wanted to have the meeting because the bishop hasn’t responded to a request. Judy Jones, SNAP Southeastern Ohio director, called the meeting educational and informational. She said survivors of clergy abuse also would speak.

I am guessing that Bishop Murry does not realize that this so called "outside group", consist of thousands of victims who have been sexually abused by priest, some of them are from Youngstown area..

Yesterday I made my mind up to go to the doctor today. In I walk and two retired Catholic priests are sitting in the waiting room. The one was on his way in to see the doctor. I felt like asking the one left in the waiting room if his friend had an STD. I did not and began a conversation with him on and about the hidden abuse of children.

The response by the priest was that "The abuse of children goes back to the Roman days" when it was (acceptable) and that it still goes on in the Orient. The conversation only went down hill at that point!

They are so blind and mislead by the Bishops and Cardinals it makes me sick.

He tried to say it was the sexual revolution that promoted child abuse. I said that was not the case and that it's been deeply ingrained in the Catholic Church since 308 and he was squirming in his seat with his Irish accent.

I asked him if he read the Ryan report and the conversation ended. He did pay to much attention to my Daughter.

He asked what religion I was and I said that was a personal question and that he he did not know me good enough to ask such a question!

"We are not accountable to an outside group" says the Bishop.

"Not accountable" speaks volumes. The bishops STILL don't feel accountable for their actions--- to anyone.

"...to an outside group." How are survivors of abuse by clergy "outside." They're mostly baptized Catholics. They've seen a side of clergy that is a lot more intimate than most Catholics.

So how does the good Bishop manage to characterize SNAP as an "outside" group?

Because they say something other than "yes Excellency" when dealing with bishops?

Because they're not "good" victims who just take what is offered?

It is so sad that the bishop believes himself to be an absolute authority - accountable to no one - not even the victims of his own hierarchical/institutional clerics. He should go to them, not the other way around. I have heard of a few bishops who actually do that - go to the victim. It is remarkably healing. Too bad this bishop is too arrogant to know when he is in the wrong.

I often wonder if these perverted catholic clergy and their bishop and major superior enablers think that Our Lord is Proud of Them for allowing the rape and sodomy of the children, young people and vulnerable adults of our church to continue. On Who's Shoulders Are the Divine and Comforting Hands of Our Crucified Lord Placed In Pity and Solace?
I used to kneel in Church and Pray for GOD to let me die because living was so hard. I only wish Catholics would educate themselves about the ritualistic horrors that were inflicted on the Innocent of Our Church by the Pedophile and Sexual Predatory of the Roman Catholic Clergy.
