SALEM — What police say started as an attempt to contact a resident about an earlier arrest ended in a nearly 1 1/2 hour standoff at an East 6th Street home.
Police went about 5:15 p.m. Friday to 743 E. 6th St. to contact the resident, John Spence, 29, regarding paperwork from an earlier arrest.
When they arrived, police saw Spence inside the home holding a shotgun and a woman also inside the home.
One of the officers began talking to Spence and convinced the woman, believed to be Spence’s wife, to leave the house. Perry Township police, additional city officers and units from the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol arrived to assist.
After about 1 1/2 hours, Spence stepped onto the back porch holding a sword. While a city officer tried to get control of the sword, an OSP trooper used a Taser on Spence and Spence was restrained and taken in to custody.
Spence was transported to Salem Community Hospital for evaluation.
No additional charges have been filed pending further investigation.

The basic reasoning functions of this individual seem compromised. The police did a fine job taking him into custody without anyone getting injured.
he was not holding his wife , she was their trying to help him... she walked into his house on her own and when she decided to walk out of the house he let her .... she does not beleive she was in any danger.. watch wfmj 27 for more details
This is a good example of why cops need Tasers. They could have let him run around with a sword for a while or just shot him. This way the force was non-lethal yet subdued him and ended the situation.
