Lieutenant governor will visit Youngstown and neighborhoods

Published: Thu, January 22, 2009 @ 1:36 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher will spend a day in Youngstown next month to experience the positives and negatives in the city and its neighborhoods.

A tentative date of Feb. 17 for Fisher’s visit was announced during the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative Vacant Property Campaign news conference today in Youngstown City Council chambers.

Fisher’s visit is part of the effort to get Youngstown more Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds from the state, said state Sen. Joe Schiavoni. D-33rd, noting that “the people of Youngstown felt slighted” when the funds were allocated.

Ohio received $258 million with $141.2 million awarded to 22 cities and counties in September 2008. At that time, it was announced that Youngstown would get $2.7 million from the NSP, which is a federal program administered by the state.

When ODOD released the list in December of which areas would receive portions of the remaining $116.8 million, Youngstown was left out.

“It will be really important to show the blighted areas, but also all the positives,” said Schiavoni of when Fisher visits.

It has been estimated that in order to revitalize neighborhoods and properly administer a demolition plan for vacant properties it will take about $20 million to $25 million, said Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams.

“We know we’re not going to get that in one shot,” he said.

“I’m happy that Lt. Gov. Fisher will be in Youngstown so we can show him there are distressed neighborhoods, but there are also strong neighborhoods,” said Williams.

I hope that they give him a police escort so he doesn't get robbed.

the only one that talked from the heart was Mary Krupa a community activist who spoke of her ongoing participation in stabling her neighborhood through grassroots operations methods. one of them is Involvement 24/7. It is up to the residents in ytown to bring ytown back to its glory by shopping and eating at ytown's establishments. ytown residents must stop whinning and involve themselves in the positives and the negatives of ytown. Quit giving J and his administration and council a slap on the back and a pass for reelection.

I am so glad he will see the blighted areas--I've always been bothered by the fact that when powerful people visit, they never see the real Youngstown--rather they visit the incubator and hear all of the cheer leading--maybe if some of these politcos see the grim realties here, they might be motivated to help out.

Bring him to the hoods on the south side. The boys will be impressed. A fine car, cash and credit cards for an offering will be appreciated.

i agree with cityguy. lt governor needs to tour the blighted areas, not the ones ol' JEDD and his ass kissers like to show off, you know, the incubator, YSU, chevy center, all the ones JEDD and his mighty whitey affluent buddies, not to mention his uncle tom council bums, like to harp on.

of course, ol' JEDD will want us to be on our best behavior, or he'll sick those nazi storm trooper cops on us like he did during that weak-ass zero tolerance b.s.! he'll put on his usual minstrel show for the massa fisher, of course, just trying to get more money, so he can misuse it, and line his pockets up with it!

does anyone think he'll see all the urban terrorists out and about? what about the narcotics dealers? most of them, and that dudley do wrong police force are the mani reasons so much blight is here. i'm just saying!
