Crash near Mahoning/Columbiana border causes power outage

SALEM — Ohio Edison crews are working today to replace two downed power poles at the intersection of Pine Lake Road and U.S. Route 62 near the border of Columbiana and Mahoning counties.

Perry Township Police Chief Mike Emigh said at 1 p.m. that some homes in the area were without power after a one-car accident.

A woman driver was heading south on Route 62 into Salem about 10:30 a.m.

Emigh said the woman moved her vehicle toward the edge of the road because a northbound vehicle swerved during snowy conditions.

The woman’s vehicle went off the road and brought down live electrical lines on her car. Another power pole broke when the first pole broke.

Authorities had to turn off the power before removing the woman. Emigh said she was taken to Salem Community Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The chief said he did not have her name. The driver of the other car did not stop.

The chief said power would be restored once the poles were up and lines replaced.
