Springfield trustees to interview fire chief candidates

Published: Fri, January 9, 2009 @ 4:46 p.m.

NEW SPRINGFIELD —Springfield Township trustees will interview five applicants for the part-time fire chief’s position when they meet in special session at 10 a.m. Saturday.

On the list to be interviewed are: Interim Fire Chief Matt Gebhardt, Assistant Fire Chief Scott Rice, EMS Squad Second Lieutenant Jim Bacon, paramedic and firefighter Tom Mason and First Captain Dan Bender.

The trustees are expected to convene and then go into executive session for the interviews.

The township has been operating with Gebhardt, a former First Captain, as interim fire chief since the resignation of full time Chief Brian Hughes in February. Hughes resigned after his position was made part-time following his return to work from a suspension. The suspension was imposed after he was found guilty of several misdemeanor charges in connection with a 2005 training exercise at a Garfield Road barn fire.
