Shaun Lane taken off field on cart

Published: Mon, January 5, 2009 @ 9:44 p.m.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Hubbard native Shaun Lane was carefully strapped to a stretcher and carted off the field after he delivered a vicious hit against a Texas kickoff returner in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night.

Lane, a backup cornerback, waved his left hand and pumped his left fist to the crowd as the cart carried him off. Lane appeared to hurt his right shoulder or his neck when he tackled the Longhorns’ Jordan Shipley on a kickoff after Ohio State had taken a 6-3 lead.

Two teammates picked Lane up and tried to help him off, but he fell back to the ground, then lay on his back for several minutes. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and Texas coach Mack Brown came out on the field while treatment was administered.

The injury occurred with 5:34 left in the first half.
