Former Trumbull Co. volunteer cop charged with falsification

Published: Fri, February 27, 2009 @ 1:05 p.m.

WARREN — A former volunteer police officer could find himself behind bars for up to six months if convicted of a misdemeanor falsification charge filed against his this week.

Maj. Tom Stewart, Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department, said the misdemeanor charge was filed against Tom Colosimo, who is due to appear for arraignment Monday in Newton Falls Municipal Court.

Colosimo of Newton Falls is free on a personal recognizance bond.

Colosimo had worked about 20 hours per week as a patrolman for the Newton Township Police Department. He also volunteered as a reserve officer with the West Farmington Police Department and headed up the Trumbull County Child Abduction Response Team. He is working for none of those agencies at this time.

Colosimo, working as a volunteer Newton Township police officer, said he was shot in his bulletproof vest July 7, 2008, by an unidentified assailant. Colosimo, before the shooting, called 911 to let dispatchers know he was investigating suspicious activity (possible copper theft) around a cell phone tower on Miller Graber Road. A few minutes later, he reported being shot while wearing his bulletproof vest and said he fired back at the suspect.

Stewart said detectives investigating the shooting did not see the facts and forensic evidence lining up with Colosimo’s statements.

“We believe he may have shot himself or had someone do it for him, but this definitely did not happen the way he said it did,” Stewart said.

Volunteer Cop, Hummmm.... Sounds like this freeloader who is getting a 100% disability pension from the Veterans Administration, is well enough to work a stressful and demanding job as a volunteer but can't hold a real paying job because it will impact his VA benefits. Talk about waste, fraud, and abuse of the VA system. This guy should be taken off the disability roles and made to pay back any monies he has received while he was "volunteering". I know plenty of veterans who need disability benefits but are denied (mostly Vietnam era veterans) and this guy whines because he had a reaction to a shot. Some elected official needs to do his/her job and have this bum investigated and brought to justice.

The mayor of Youngstown wants to hire volunteer / reserve Police Officers. They can't get qualified educated people to take the job in Youngstown getting paid a full time salary. Did the lack of a good backround check / psychological evaluation / polygraph lead to this happening in Newton Township?
An example of how this idea could be bad in youngstown.

Now why isn't he getting charged with the false charges he shoved on the west farmington chief who mind you lost his job along with another wonderful coped who lost her job in a part of this.By the way the charges were droped due to lack of proof backing up colosimo story. And why haven't these two remarkable cops been offered their jobs back. They deserve that much with all the crap they went through because of this guy and the junk he started. They mayor of farmington should know by now colosimo was lieing and give these two cops thei jobs back. They've done more for this town then colosimo could ever even dream of.
