AUSTINTOWN — The Fitch High School wrestling team qualified eight athletes to the Division I district tournament next weekend in Massillon.
The Falcons finished second as a team on Saturday in the sectional tournament with 197 points. Twinsburg took the team title with 228, while Boardman was third with 131 and Canfield fourth with 124 in the field of 12 schools.
“This is one of the toughest sectionals there is and we had 10 kids place and eight qualified for district,” said Fitch coach Brett Powell.
“In preparing for the meet, we didn’t let them set their own standards. We challenged them to achieve a goal and that worked for this sectional, “ said Powell.
Powell said he was upset with the team following the Hephner tournament two weeks ago and so they worked really hard since then, focusing on condition and finishing out matches.
Powell said the Perry district is the toughest district in the state and that the Falcons will have heavy workouts early in the week, then prepare mentally and plan strategy for matches.
“Shawn Ague, Louis Greco and Chris Miller defended [their individual] championships, while Scott Satterlee is a great story because he didn’t get out of here last year and this year he wins a title,” said Powell.
A junior, Ague (28-6) decisioned Matt Turek of Madison 5-3 for the 112-pound crown.
“I am satisfied, but didn’t do as well as I wanted,” said Ague. “I would like to have gotten more takedowns.
“I was fourth at district last year and my goal is to make it back to state again,” said Ague.
Satterlee (27-11), also a junior, decisioned Scott Bulzan of Chardon, 5-1, in the 125 championship match.
He fell behind 2-0 early, took a 3-2 lead only to have the match tied in the final 26 seconds, then he quickly got a takedown for the decision.
“He was a tough kid and I went out expecting a fight, but I had two takedowns and an escape for the win,” said Satterlee.
In preparing for big meets Satterlee said he gives 100 percent at practices then goes home and lifts weights. He wanted to make it to district where he wants to qualify for state.
Greco (38-3) decisioned Michael Baker of Twinsburg for the 145 title and Miller pinned Matt Clark of Solon in five minutes for the 215 title.
Boardman High freshman Jon Dillon (9-0) got the championship underway when he decisioned Mike Labry of Twinsburg, 5-2, at 103 pounds.
“He’s a good wrestler and I had to keep pressure on him,” said Dillon. “I scored points with a take down and three near falls.”
“I work hard at practice and my teammates push me, “ said Dillon.
Robby Reed (33-8) of Canfield pinned Jerry Pasquale of Boardman (1:36) for the 119 title.
