Slick roads blamed for 25 crashes in the city, plus more elsewhere

Published: Thu, February 19, 2009 @ 9:16 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Icy roads challenged morning commuters, with the first crash, a multiple pileup, called in at 6:51 a.m. today on the state Route 7/11 connector, police said. By 9 a.m., 25 crashes had been reported throughout the city. Drivers slid off ice-slicked pavements on Andrews Avenue, Coitsville Road, Market Street bridge, Oakwood Avenue, Bears Den Road, Hylda Avenue and Garland Avenue, to name a few. The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post handled a handful of wrecks early today on U.S. Route 224, state Route 11 and state Route 617. None of the crashes caused life-threatening injuries, police said.

We wouldn't want to blame the drivers for not slow down 10 MPH? Happens everytime it snows, alot of people are still in a hurry and do not slow down

I think the roads were blamed FOR the crashes not ON them and the headline for the East Library story the other day probably should have read Library DEDICATED not DONATED...

We should all be used to slick roads by now. The people that cause these crashes are morons that shouldn't be allowed to drive.

I wonder why the road crews weren't out sooner to slag or salt the roads (esp. the interstates and state rds.)? I took my son to school this am and almost couldn't stop at the red light ahead because of Black Ice. I was only traveling about 25 mph and luckily had about 10 car lengths between me and the car ahead or it could have been a really bad day.
It is sometimes the drivers' fault on slick roads but not always.

Where were the salt trucks? Why weren't they out by 6 am? What were they waiting for?

OK everyone, take a deep breath and realize this is still winter as well as times when our gov. officials need to cut their spending. Some of us know how to adjust to winter driving conditions, pay attention to road conditions and even check the weather reports before we leave the house. Others have absolutely no clue what is going on, do not warm up their cars and don't clear the snow & ice off their windows. They fly down the roads like a bat out of h--- and tail gate others as if they are morons in the road contributing to their late arrival. Isn't this exciting?

scrooge....the salt trucks were on 80 yesterday and Tue, it did rain quite hard yesterday. Vindyak you are correct if they would take the snow and ice off there cars and stop tail gateing, half the accidents would not happen. I see them all the time rushing down 80 and 11. This morning if the guy did not hit the lamp post he would have came all the way accross the other side of 80. Maybe the stimulis package will give OH money to buy more salt....YEAH RIGHT!

I say just declare a state of emergency when the temp drops below 30, then we don't have to drive anywhere and I get to lay at home watching TV all day :)

Maybe this stimulus? plan will allow us the money to heat our highways so we won't have to wait for the salt trucks? Just think of all the money we would save by not having to buy salt.

Face facts people....If you live in Ohio then you should know how to drive in all weather. But for some very stupid people, they think they can drive the same way on wet, snowy roads as they do on dry roads in the summer. As I tell my children as they are getting their drivers lic. Yes you have to pay attention on how you drive but more importantly you have to watch out for how everyone else on the roads are driving.
I have been in 3 car accidents in my 25 yrs. of driving, and not one was my fault. All 3 were caused by either someone running a red light, a stop sign or driving to fast on icy roads. Thank goodness none of them were very serious accidents and no one was hurt.
So just take your time, drive according to weather conditions, and if you choose not to..then you have no one to blame but yourself and lets hope your mistake does not cause someone else their lifes.

Not even a ich of snow and we have cars crasihn all over the palce. APrt of the problem is that here is a layer of ice you can not see and even if you are going 10 mph you can stil lslid right off the road or into someone else. Some people don't lsow down even if a toradno was coming they would be going 85 mph down the raod and would end up crashing.

Refer to the news article about how people aren't buying auto insurance because they want to save money... think: ice, stupid people, no insurance.

when you are operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway, you are responsible for maintaining control of that vehicle at all times.
This means snow, ice, oil slick or whatever.
Notice the big word 'responsible'.

On days like that you got a choice, stay home or be more cautious,it won't hurt to think of somebody's else's life.I do understand accident's do happen, just think before you leap. Some of the best drivers get into accidents.Come on people, watch the weather channel, the morning news, what ever it take,If thats to much,STAY HOME.Winter will be over soon.

Where did "black ice" come from? I don't remember this stuff prior to the late '90s.

I'm all for slowing down and paying attention, but where in this town are you people driving?

If the old farts I have get stuck behind every day when I am trying to go somewhere slowed down any more they would be STOPPED.

Geez, on a sunny summer day I can't get the idiots out of the way just so I can do the speed limit. Not speed, just do the posted speed limit.

And before anyone jumps - NO, I'm not some crazed lead foot lunatic, and I don't ever tailgate. I just get fed up with following behind the ubiquitous little old man with his hat and coke bottle glasses on driving 15 miles an hour under the speed limit - regardless of the road conditions.
