Fire a gun and this device will find you

Published: Thu, December 31, 2009 @ 1:30 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The city will spend about $500,000 to buy an acoustic gunshot location system that will help police pinpoint where shots are fired.

The city Board of Control approved a plan Thursday to spend up to $530,000 to buy the system from ShotSpotter Inc. of Mountain View, CA.

City council approved the purchase Dec. 16.

I believe they get calls now from citizens telling thwm where shots are fired. That is not the problem. Who fired them is the problem and where are they now? Just a waste of tax dollars in my mind.

The devices will tell the cops that a gun was fired (or a firecracker went off, or a car backfired, and so on), but unless the cops are right around the corner, the shooter will be long gone by the time the cops do get there, and nobody will have seen a thing.

Can they be linked to a series of cameras that will take pics of shooters as well? Maybe we can find another 1/2 million for cameras.

Money could be better spent hiring more police. The device may tell where the shots are fired at but you have to have the police to respond and Is the shooter going to hang around until the police show up?

A true waste of taxpayer money. So, you heard a bang, now what are you going to do?
I beleive spending that half-million on police patrols would have been a far better value.

They don't come out now when the gunshot locations are called in . What's to say that they wont ignore the gunshot location system .

Actually a nice system and deployed in 46 counties/cities including a few FBI locations.

I don't believe the Youngstown has enough resources to chase down all of the gunshots that occur every night .

I had a cop tell me this was a waste of money. By the time a police officer can get to the site, the shooters are gone. Shots fired are not high on the priority list.

Another bad call, council.

Now the new game will be, "lets set off firecrackers and see how long it takes for cops to show up" Once you get a good baseline you will know how long it will take any cops that are called to get to your neighborhood.

Don't tell me that the system can distinguish between firecrackers and gunshots 100% of the time.

Now if a crime is planned the police will be distracted to another location far away from the crime . The subculture will use it as a game with law enforcement .

Now the police know which parts of town to avoid. Would you want to patrol the dangerous parts of town where shots have been fired?

Well I know one city that will have a huge demand for black market gun silencers.

Is this the device that is used by the military in Iraq/Afghanistan? If so, the device detects the vortex created by a super sonic projectile and then using readings from multiple sensors to triangulate the point of origin of the projectile. I'm not certain that the system Youngstown is purchasing is the same, but if not, and it somehow only detects loud bangs...then that seems a BIT useless. Arguments that YPD will just refuse to respond are not valid, but the argument that the shooters will be long gone are very valid.

Perhaps at night cruisers could be posted at strategic locations that experienced a high amount of gunfire for a faster responce . Getting the thugs off the streets should be a top priority .

I agree this is a huge waste of money. We need more humans, trained officers that is, not this. Seems to me that our elected officials buckled under to to another corpperation & designated that money for "technology" so the same old people can make a buck. Our law makers & money spenders keep giving it to the rich producers not the working stiffs. In this case the working stiffs are all the laid off law enforcement officers - nobody is safe anymore.

Stopping the bang.

I remember the CIA placed cases and cases of exploding ammunition in Vietnam at enemy ammo dumps for the enemy to use. If you fired it, the ammo would explode and destroy the weapon and injure or kill the enemy.

Now, that is effective use of technology.

If you supplied exploding ammo that destroyed a gun to the subculture you would be sued by the ACLU and they would get huge cash awards . The subculture is protected .

It`s a good thing for usa1- pro-conservaterican that there isn`t one of these devices for detecting conservative hypocrisy and lies or the Police would be surrounding his dwelling 24-7.It could be called teabagger triangulation technology.

Waste of money, spend the money on hiring people who need jobs for one, and saturating the high crime areas with patrols.

Here's my game plan. I'm a thief and want to rob a place on the north side at 11:00. so i send my partner to the top of market street on the south side and have him shoot 9 shots into the air at 10:55. police respond and so do i. Easy money at the expense of someone's expensive useless tool.
