Youngstown girl shot as car driver tries to pass a crowd

Published: Wed, December 30, 2009 @ 10:30 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — City police said an 11-year-old East Avondale Avenue girl was shot when a motorist fired a gun at a crowd of people gathered in the 200 block of East Avondale.

Treiash Franklin suffered a grazing wound to the chest, police said.

Witnesses told police that a crowd of people had gathered in the street at 5:13 p.m. Wednesday following a disturbance. A man driving an older model gray, two-door Cadillac came down the street and wanted to pass the crowd.

People refused to get out of the street and the man opened fire, shooting into the crowd, witnesses told police.

The girl was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment where hospital personnel found the bullet in her clothing, police said.

No one else was injured, and the gunman fled the scene, police said.

WTH!?! I'm not sure who to be mad at, the idiot driver who fired a round into a crowd with children or the moron crowd who wouldn't move for a car to pass? The crowd had it coming but c'mon man, there were children present, that's just stupid! If it were an all adult or teenage crowd I could live with that, those people are supposed to have common sense.

Says, what a conundrum. Like I've posted before, this is why you can't go into many parts of Youngstown for this very reason. What if this happened to you, just driving through a neighborhood and you get caught up in this "disturbance"? I'll be called a racist again, but this is so sad that we have lost the freedom to go anywhere we want in this country, i.e. inner cities. If we can walk or drive through the suburbs pretty safely, why can't we do this in the "hoods"? Is it the mentality of the residents? It's not the economy and it's not slavery. Black leaders and all the Kwaanza type activities are not working. Also, why would a responsible parent let their child be in a "disturbance"?

For those who don't know this story is about my little eleven year cousin and as usual the media has it wrong. The driver shot through a crowd of kids standing on the sidewalk in front of my aunt's house while the adults were inside but somebody explain to me how did my little eleven year old cousin get hit in the back as she was running into the house. Those shots were fired at my aunts house and it wasn't a random act. So for those who seem they know a lot about what happened and passing judgement.. do ur research before u pass judgement.

MsDiva, this proves my point that I keep on making. We only know what we read. Where else do we get the info? If the Vindy doesn't report it then as far as we readers know, it never happened. If they report without facts or context, then what do you want us to do? And besides, do you think it's safe to be in your relatives neighborhood?

Question is, why are they shooting in the first place? No matter the reason, it's not right to just drive by and fire a gun in a public dwelling or anywhere for that matter. We are not back in the wild wild west days.

Lifes, unfortunately they are. And will continue to be so until someone in the black community quits the rhetoric, the block watches, Kwaanza, Black History month and most importantly, quit making excuses. Everybody knows the problem and will not accept the remedies. It's hard for me to be compassionate for people, fellow Americans and humans, as long as they won't help themselves.

if everybody has gun like the wild wild west, things would be different, because everybody can shoot back, control the bullets, you control the guns

In our history's era of the wild wild west no cowboy ever had the stupidity to shoot into a crowd of children. That is the difference between the wild west and today.

Children of the wild wild west era never had the stupidity to stand in the way of a stagecoach as it traveled through town. That is the difference between the wild west and today.

Today's lesson...we are growing more stupid people than in the days of the wild west.

We certainly have come a long way in the past 150 years, haven't we.

did they catch the shooter? if not why didn't some one in the crowd get the plate number where ever there's a crowd there's bound to be trouble why would any responsible parent let their child hang out in that environment

Do what I do...keep driving...if they're disabled and CANT move, one thing, but if they just WONT move because they're useless ignorant individuals who think standing in middle of street makes them HARD, dont even beep...just keep driving

you have to learn how to read to be able to get the plate number.

all these kids learn in school is how to have babies and collect freebies from the government.

The subculture handbook sez that it is rude to honk at pedestrians . Shooting is acceptable to get people to scatter . This is their form of expression . The shooter is not known as he was not seen . This all happened so fast .

MsDiva, if what you say is true, the driver had to be one ignorant person with some very, very big balls to try to fire a gun through a crowd of children in order to shoot up a house. You also said your aunt's house was the target....did anyone bother to tell the police this or will we be reading about an act of retaliation sometime next week? Remember, the Vindy can only report what it finds out through its investigation and if all the witnesses lied to cover up the truth then that's all anyone is going to know when they read the paper or watch the news.

The driver was on a crack cocaine run and the crack dealers rule the streets .

When will people learn self control? Just because you are pissed does not give you the right to carelessly shoot off a gun for every little thing. They are many people who have wronged me in this life, but I would never think of shooting up a house, car, or a group of people. I have a hard time understanding their animalistic ways. Just because you have a rough life, no dad, and are poor does not give you the right to father many babies, sell drugs, fight dogs, and kill people. There are ways out od a ghetto life, many have done it. Get off you asses and accomplish something positive in life!

USA1, as you well know, it is easier to blame someone else than to take responsibility for your own actions!

The no snitch rule is alive and well. Someone in that crowd knows who the shooter was. Within a week we will hear "da shot my baby!"

The solution is simple...Keep your kids in the house when it is 20 degrees outside. Where were the parents? In the nice, warm, house? I think the Vindy should stop wasting printing ink on such stories because it happens so much and NOTHING is done about it.

Why do people wanting a better life move from the cities to the suburbs? This is why. Why do posters always put down suburbanites when something happens in Canfield or Poland? I'd rather live among the arrogant then the ignorant.

What is a crowd that blocks a street? It is a mob, a bunch of clowns that have nothing better to do. Call it like it is. When was the last time you heard of someone else being in the same situation. I have, and their life was threatened. Where have you been YPD in arresting this mess? Yes, this is going on in the Youngstown neighborhoods. Before this happens to you. Get the gun like I have. I will defend my life, family, and property. Also, we have a mayor who is happy that the murder rate is down but other crimes are way up. I would rather see the scum dead and others safe.

Things are much better in Youngstown now . It is UTOPIA 2010 . The subculture has a grip on the city and IT'S ALL GOOD ! The goverment warehouses for direct shipments of cocaine , purchased by the government at wholsale prices from Mexico , will soon be built .

Rather a crowd of people were blocking the street, or not, it does not make a difference. This violent act of firing a gun within city limits is just ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that, an innocent child was injured in the process. And the shooter, he could have just turned his vehicle around, than went another way. But instead of doing something logical, he chose to play gangster. Could one consider this to be a severe case of road rage,or what?

The Turkey comment???????? Just use the other hand next time and when that one is gone get someone else to do your dirty work. I'm not downing your idea I'm just making a point "A Heartless Person Will Always Find A Way To Seek Revenge" LOCK THEM UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY! I'm quite sure the person who done this has a previous criminal record. Blame our "LENIENT" justice system for allowing someone who should have been in jail anyway, but was let back out on the street for society to deal with.
