Nigerian charged with attempt on airliner; his father warned U.S. about him

Published: Sat, December 26, 2009 @ 6:48 p.m.

DETROIT (AP) — A 23-year-old Nigerian man who claimed to have ties to al-Qaida was charged Saturday with trying to destroy a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day, as authorities learned his father had warned U.S. officials of concerns about his son.

Some airline passengers traveling Saturday felt the consequences of the frightening attack. They were told that new U.S. regulations prevented them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing.

The Justice Department charged that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO-mahr fah-ROOK ahb-DOOL-moo-TAH-lahb) willfully attempted to destroy or wreck an aircraft; and that he placed a destructive device in the plane.

U.S. District Judge Paul Borman read Abdulmutallab the charges in a conference room at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. where he is being treated for burns.

Just like Clinton did in the nineties, Obama will spend our money on everything else except on keeping the United States the most powerful country in the world. To the lib/democrats our military is really not needed, just diplomacy. I know this is just one guy and so was the guy at Fort Hood, but the Muslims are testing us. It appears to me according to this article that we were warned, but due to political correctness and not wanting to upset CAIR, we let this happen.

yeah, but somehow it was better when bush was spending patriot act money on bribing cell phone companies to let them spy on US citizens who have nothing to do with terrorism. theyre still allowed to use 9/11 to wiretap phone calls at random. or for just shiz and giggles.

money clouds judgment. thats one advantage religious extremists have over us. theyre only concerned about glory and imaginary afterlife virgins.

"Did you forget to harp about the dangers of giving the guy a trial? "

Trial ? Oh no ! This poor misguided fellow needs treated for depression and returned to Nigeria where he can be with his family and lead a productive life . We must not allow our fears of being attacked to cause any actions that will bring hatred toward us . Obama should increase aid to Nigeria and stop the drilling for oil there that is causing an environmental disaster when the Nigerians blow up the pipelines .

Hey Northside girl,

For your misguided information. Your boy Obama has not tried to repeal the patriot act either. It would seem after his first meeting with homeland security he decided it would be advantageous to keep tabs on these idiots after all.

So sad, calling posters nit wits? You're too stupid to post. Our scared litle right wing mouths with no integrity do more harm than the terrorists? This has to be the most convoluted mish mash of words I've ever read on this site and their has been some doosies. And North Side, what proof of Bush bribing cell phone companies do you have? That never happened and like Perry pointed out Obama must be bribing them too, based on your thoughtless post. Is it so important to uninformed posters like you and so sad that you'll post anything to try and be relevant? The fact is our USA is being weakened by our weak leader. Fact.

We mustn't jump to conclusions . He may have been trying to set off fireworks to help us celebrate Christmas and meant no harm . So we should be sympathetic to his injuries when the pyrotechnic device went off in his lap .

How is it that this is Obama's fault? I imagine all the problems are laid in his lap. I hope sooner or later everyone realizes this is not going to stop. Does anyone really think there is end to the fanatical religious terrorist. Security breaches in another country, is Obamas fault< Get real, fanatical Republican's, try and help get Health Care Reformed, Bank Reform, Immigration Reform that The Man is actually getting into, not just talking about. Give help where u can.
