Obama can take comfort in climate change survey

Published: Thu, December 24, 2009 @ 12:00 a.m.

The climate conference in Copenhagen was neither a total failure nor a resounding success. There were no concrete steps taken to deal with global warming, but the rich and poor countries signaled a willingness to cooperate.

Not surprisingly, President Obama, who used his global popularity to prevent the conference from being a total disaster, tried to put a positive spin on what was accomplished. But the American people aren’t buying.

What is noteworthy, however, is that Americans do believe climate change is a serious problem. According to an Associated Press-Stanford University poll, three out of every four respondents said future generations will be harmed if nothing is done to reverse global warming.

The poll results will not only bolster President Obama’s commitment to address climate change domestically and globally but will give political cover to the Democratic-controlled Congress that is considering legislation to reduce heat-trapping pollution.

Greenhouse gases

The House has passed a bill that deals with the greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, but the measure is stalled in the Senate.

But while Democrat Obama and the Democratic Congress may find solace in the poll results, they cannot ignore the fact that Americans see the economy as the most serious problem facing the world, as the poll reveals.

That means any effort to reduce greenhouse gases will have to consider the job-loss implications. That’s why many members of Congress are treading cautiously. With the national economy still sputtering — people who are unemployed or underemployed aren’t impressed with the jobless recovery — any move that costs jobs will be met with strong opposition from the American people.

President Obama, in pushing for legislation to address global warming, must be clear in explaining how the greening of America will result in jobs that pay wages comparable to those in traditional industries that would be affected by the change.

It will not be an easy sell.

For Christmas I wish for the Vindy to pursue the truth rather than advocating for a liberal agenda.

To whom does global warming make sense? The Earth has cooled since 1998 but CO2 levels have risen. It was so much warmer 400 years ago that the Vikings could circumnavigate Greenland by ship. The ice caps are shrinking on Mars. Scientists who provide data to the UN were caught falsifying data. The Antartic Ice shelf has expanded to such a degree as to make shipping difficult.

The problem isn't just the lies. It is that there are actual environmental concerns that are underaddressed as attention and funding are being diverted to the global warming lie. Such concerns include depletion of the rain forest, water so polluted that the mercury levels have made fish consumption unsafe, and overpopulation. These global warming liars are Mother Earth's worst nightmare.

The global warming lie is a vehicle to raise taxes and transfer wealth from America to other nations, as well as to yet again transfer wealth and personal liberties from the subjects to the government.

I'll say it again...Are you seeing a pattern here?

BTW, public belief and support for global warming is slipping away (see attached link).

If you're still reading...Merry Christmas!

And Al Gore makes false and idiotic statements that make him look and sound as if he has cognitive delays or like a politician.

Agree with Nonsocialist and others. No question there is a pattern and government control is the objective! Should we be concerned about what we do to the environment? Of course. Do we need alternative sources of energy? Again, of course, and why the constant delays in the undertaking of these programs? Ever hear of self-serving , selfish elected officials....

I also agree. Let Mother Nature take her course and lets not let the government dig deeper into our pockets. Besides my pockets have holes in them they've been digging so much.

Global redistribution of wealth - that is the agenda.

I agree with nonsocialist that the global warming fallacy has diverted our efforts to stupid stuff like cap and trade when really we should be focusing our efforts on making sure we aren't using up our all of our resources by replanting clear cut areas, and recycling materials.

Making us use bulbs that contain mercury which eventually gets into the water supply is idiotic and counter productive.
