New jobless benefit claims rise unexpectedly

Published: Thu, December 17, 2009 @ 9:19 a.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of newly laid off workers filing claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week as the recovery of the nation's battered labor market proceeds in fits and starts.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of new jobless claims rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week. That was a worse performance than the decline to 465,000 that economists had expected.

The four-week average for claims, which smooths out fluctuations, did fall, dipping to 467,500, the 15th straight decline, viewed as an encouraging sign that the labor market is gradually improving. The four-week average is now at its lowest point since late September 2008, the period when the financial crisis was hitting with full force.

Unemployment claims have been on a downward trend since this summer. That improvement is seen as a sign that jobs cuts are slowing and hiring could pick up as soon as early next year. But the rise in weekly claims of 7,000 last week, which had followed an increase of 19,000 the previous week, shows that the improvement has been halting.

Lets all hope they send the back date unemployment extension checks ASAP! We unemployed need to eat. I have herd rumors the extension checks will be sent out between the 18th and 23rd? Vindy should report on the extension hold up.

YES ! I wish someone would report on the extension delay ! I have been waiting 6 weeks now. I have made numerous attemps at calling them and have yet to get through. Not only are we starving but my creditors want to know what is going on. I know their case load must be tremendous but can't they, or SOMEONE let us know what the time frame is. When I filed they said 4-6 weeks, it is obviously longer. VINDY,,, can You help by reporting on this??

USA ! -I think globalists would better describe them- a cartel of international bankers and multinational corprations for the most part.It also doesn't matter whether they are Dems or Reps-they are mostly all on the same team with the banksters. The banks also run the insurance companies. These two entities(big banks and corps) also own all the big news .

USA1 is correct about the debt and worthless money printing. However, unless the whole banking system were to change and a real Congress started coining our money again (which is in the Constution ) instead of the private non federal -Federal Reseve -then we are screwed. Oh and we need to return to backing the money up with gold, silver or something of value.Currently it is printed out of thin air and is worth what the banksters tell us it is worth.

I think what I was trying to show USA! was who was behind the misery. I don't for one think the victims are responsible for the globalists caused problems we have today.

Beck, Rush ,CNN -makes no differnce they all serve the same masters.Wasn't it strange how Lou Dobbs was booted ?He didn't fit into the borderless North American scheme.Forget this party crap -wake up they are in it together. for crying out loud Bush was a nightmare . Obama appointed the head of the NY Fed during Bush II ,Tim Geitner ,when all the deregulating took place,to Sec.of Treasury. What does it take to get you folks to see the light?Anyone know who Time's person of the year is?
